I've got the Vibe SA-K series and they can be used as components or coaxal's and I really like em, kevlar cones and very slim so good if you havent got much depth to play with. Very well made and well priced I'd reccomend em, take a look !

As always with speakers - listen before you buy if at all possible!!

Personally, i love the DLS stuff - fantastic sound quality - not the cheapest though!!

Good installation & sound proofing makes a difference too!

all the mainstream high street brands arnt as good as they cracked up to be tbh.

genesis comps and rainbows sound pretty good

focals as well! though a tad harsh on some ears on the tweeter side.

oooohh, rainbow are nice too actually!!!!

It's not always in the price either 'cos i bought some expensive JL's and really hated them!!!! Treble was way too harsh for me!!!

Never buy without listening first (altough i'm about to!! )

Also note, a speaker can sound a little bit different when it's run in aswell!!

I always avoid foam surrounds on speaker drivers, as I want them to
last longer than 5 minutes.

I like the sound of the simple pioneer dual cones best.
Kevlar for cars can be a gimmick without the exact right notch filter crossovers as they have intrusive 'rings' or resonances, like a bell.

JBLs seem to be made with great quality and are a huge manufacturer
used in many clubs, and they supply proper specs. with their stuff.
Paper cones generally sound best, but are not very trendy.

Halfords is bad on price (maybe a trade card makes it better) but they
do have racks of speakers lines up to compare. You can ignore the
bass as that depends on fitment but general mid/treble is useful to
see if you can live with them.

Speakers also need 'running in'. My Alpine tweeters were very harsh
until a few weeks of heavy rock beat them into submission. As least
I don't think it was my ears! Running Tweeters from a capacitor
gives 6dB/octave cutoff - meaning the tweeter is still soaking up
a lot of midrange energy. This gives it a huge amount of IM
distortion as they only work linearly in a narrow gap with about 0.1mm
throw. Use at least 12dB/octave preferably 18dB/octave and treble
will sound much clearer.

Sound quality is the absence of a dodgy frequency response and
distortion. JBL, Eminence, KEF, Tannoy etc. can give you distortion
figures where other makes fear to tread.

For volume you also need efficiency - every 3dB is equivalent to
doubling the power of your head unit/amp. Aim for 90dB/Watt +.

Consider getting the bass to the inside of the car first. Aiming it at
the bootlid is fine but do not expect distortionless bass when you
do that. Ideally you'd remove the back seats in a cab, in a saloon
you've usually got a big enough parcel shelf - 8" drivers of the right
design will fill a living room with hi-fi music - use a decent solid
shelf here for good sound.

it's been said above - but listen first before reaching for your wallet - if it sounds good to you it is good end of conversation.

decent quality components seem to start at around the 100 mark and go up from there. for your 100 the big brands come into play - kenwood, alpine etc just buy what sounds good as they all release updated kit every year so the goalposts are constantly moving.

for mid-range efforts try jl audio as they make excellent components in my opinion (although nothing to look at), as do focal, but they both require rather more expenditure than budget stuff. anything else available for the same money is worth a listen too.

if you're looking at top of the line/exotica stuff then make friends with a dealer and don't be afraid to be guided - but always have the first paragraph above ringing round your head while listening as mistakes at these prices cause grimaces for many long weeks afterwards!

quality of installation has a great effect on sound quality results, so if you do spend proper money on components do spend some time installing them carefully. for this reason try and demo all purchases under consideration in your car rather than in the shop if at all possible - shop cabinets are good for shortlisting then any decent dealer shouldn't be afraid to demo them in your chosen motor for you - if not then find another dealer.
