E30 Zone

I am goin to turbo my tech 1..... firstly because i am on a buget i'm not goin to use management at first but run it all through my air flow meter. i knoe alot of you dont agree with this but where i work at ferrari we have an f50 twin turbo running the same deal sill really but ne way , the question is why should i do this?

i am goin to buy a turbo kit from the US and use a de comp plate and two head gaskits and strong head bolts. has anyone ever done this ?

also when i do get management i'm goin mega squirt and i know there are three ways of doing this fisrt is to build the kit your selfcost about £275.

go for pulg and play megasquirt .... how much dose that cost and how easy is it to fit?

biggest downside of a suck thru AFM is the IAT is then on the wrong side of the charge, if the IAT's go high when boosting( WIll happen ) the ECU needs the info so its Air denisty correction can tweak the fuelling and timing maps to suit the intake temps, blow through will leak boost up the AFM shaft, but you could possibly "pot" the lid to help with sealing......

Other massive dowside, is the motronic itself, although very very capable is a nightmare to map properly, and you WILL need to use bigger injectors to achieve your goals, and revise the load and rpms sites to enable you to tweak where required( ie peak N/A torque)

Heads up, you need an aftermarket or piggyback ECU, or get VERY good at changing headgaskets folks

TCD ( avail through Gunni ( GSTuning) do a boosted Motronic 173 Eprom to suit the application, its mapped for way less timinmg @ WOT than stock and would go some way to achieving your aims, but TBH, given the cost implications, a standalone is by far the better soloution.

PnP MS for the JPT55 is fairly DIY there are all the inputs, but the output stages require more though as there is NO provision on the std ECU connector to add extra coil drives etc, admittedly you can poach other outputs and reassign functions to them( Evap purge valve for example ) but its all Less PnP than you may think ?

Re the decomp, not really req unless you'll go for more then 0.8 Bar provided you have the 8.8:1 CR mill in good fettle, and a decently sized turbo hotside and downpipe

Ive just fitted a turbo on mines and listen to Ant as ive looked at all the options available and its much cheaper and reliable to go standalone.
A relative of mines had a 2.7 turbo with the std ecu plus rrfpr etc and he went through head gaskets all the time.

As for the turbo kit from the US, BE CAREFUL as the turbo manifold I got was rather cheap, however because of the design and the fact that we have rhd E30s getting a straightforward downpipe is a mission .

For one the steering racks in the way and the exhaust guy told me that even if he got the pipe through, the excessive heat generated would melt the wiring in the car behind the dash as well as cause the downpipe to knock against the manifold all the time.

PS if you are going to use a decomp plate then the engineer recomends one head gasket as 2 would not create a strong seal. The decomp acts as an extension of the head and a single gasket would allow for a better seal iirc. Something about a crunching effect or similar.

Im no authority on this so all I can offer you is advice from my experience thus far.
