Power handling of the E30 chassis

Hi everybody, as some of you may already now, i have a turbocharged 3.0l e30
Last year i managed to rip off the rear diff support, bend both drive shafts splines and also the prop shafts splines. (with around 450-500hp)
Now i have a new shell this has all been reinforced
The only problem im worried about now is my chassis twisting!
I dont really want to roll cage the car as i want it as street looking and original as possible and want to keep the rear seats ect, i dome mind something suttle but only as lond as its not in your face!
any ideas of how much power i can put in the shell without it becoming a sweet wrapper???
or other strenghtening mods?
my current output of the engine should be around 700-800hp with its new setup.

It's not the power that will 'twist' it, it's the torque.
I think it would take an awful lot of torque for it to twist.

The guys got better than a 700hp motor, its going to have alot of torque, so Max what is it thats an awful lot thats going to twist the chasis??
Personally I don't know the answer to your question, but if you don't want a roll cage I would seam weld the shell if you haven't allready and beef up you sills, rear strut brace might help too. As well as front and rear subframe strengthening, IE do kits for the rear and UweM3 will do you fronts.
Your gonna have to think up something ingeneious to counter lateral forces though the strut brace won't really cut the mustard.
How often wil the chasis be seeing the full 800hp though?

I'm guessing well over 1000lb/ft, but I couldn't tell you a correct answer.
Seam weldings definitely a good idea.

Weld the doors shut Dukes of Hazard Stylee. Or could try welding diagonal beams under the floor pan from a-post base to opposing rear corner?
I know you'd rather not have one but I think for any decent results a properly fitted cage would be the best option.

all the time really, but more 700hp, but it will be on a speed/boost related setup to give me more grip, so as speed goes up so does boost
already thought of diagonal beems but cant do because of the exhaust system ect

thats alot of power from a 3litre turbo does it struggle to put the power down. what lump you got in that thing and how much did the whole job set you back? have you posted any details of the car on the site as i'd like to read up on it.

The answer is yes, but now i have 285's on the rear so we will see, its from a toyota supra and i did myself soi havent worked it out yet, i have over 1000 pictures of its making and it will be posted up when i get a chance!

Been a while, i know, will b back on road soon, i see u have ur boost junkie sign too, i now have a supra twin turbo 500hp too so i am not going mad with no power!
I will do, just been mega busy getting this car ready, been working on it every evening and weekend! so i havent had time for anything

Hi
You need a discret cage one you can not see, make torque tube, a space frame to run inside the trans tunnel linking the front and rear subframe, also try to brace the suspension points back to either end of the torque tube.
Discret tube can run behind the dash, links across the inside of the back seat etc.

i dont mind having roll bars up the a pillars and through the dash, just no x frame in rear rear seats!!

The answer to your question is... What is enough power???
Same engine + more boost, larger injectors, larger inlet manifold and body, HKS cams, HKS twin power, HKS clutch, AEM ecu, aeromotive fuel system ect................................................... = alot more power
I thought to myself if i do it all again with a new shell, ill do it the best way i can, its setup for 1000hp now, the only thing i need to change is the turbo and it will run 1000+ but id rather have a more drivable car, the drivetrain is now setup for 253MPH although it will probably never reach that speed its good for economy cruising high speed driving (autobhan

) And my new speedo will display 240- 260MPH

It should be making around 700-900nm´s of torque depending on where he´s getting 800hp.
What you need to do is at least tie the subframe solid to the chassis, and you will have to cage it ,
at least partially. also plenty of stiffening up front.
The key to 800hp daily(sort of daily) is linear boost control, throttle boost control.

The subframe needs to use solid bushings so your not ripping things out,

check the project section and click on enough threads to look at ,
some have totally revised their back ends.
The diff needs to be connected into the cage as well otherwise you´ll always be rotating the diff in the subframe.
in the front you´ll need to strengthen the subframe as well so you will not tear it apart.
I´d go with new motor mounts that connect to the chassis rails.
Also you should definitely get some good boost control, stepping on the gas and getting 30psi in a second
is NOT good, definetely get traction control as well.

Yes, well i actually have 2 sets of wheels for this car, i am running 18"x10j azev A's all round 255/35/18 up front and 285/30/18 at the rear
and the 19" E46 m3 wheels are running 225/35/19 front and 255/30/19 at rear
and the arches have all been widened

what did you do to strengthen the diff mount? im having issues wirh mine with much less power than you have?i have cracks apearing on the diff mounting plate around the edge at the 2 rear bolts? any close up pics to offer guidance?

Take a look at this thread and ull have a better idea, mine cracked also but im using an e46 diff cover on a M535i LSD so now it cant twist

As for structual strength if the shell is still bare the answer would be to semi-space frame the chassis, seam weld and fit in integrated cage whereby its connected to the cars chassis at certain stress/pickup points so loading from the diff, gear box, suspension, engine is transferred throughout the car (not a bolt in cage job)
If engine is already in and rather not space frame you could rose joint the suspension bits and add additional pick points/brackets around key areas to help transfer stresses outwards, add braces under the transmission tunnel, across rear boot where the diff is mounted and so on. Basically a lot of fabrication work by a professional with relevant FIA/MSA certs a bad cage is worse than no cage last thing anyone wants is a cross section snapping and going through your torso
