E30 Zone

just wandering has anyone put a rover 2.0 t16 turbo engine in an e30, just thinking i have one with all ancillaries in my garage, could make a good conversion being a light 4 pot and also giving 200 bhp in standard form

i had 1 very fast car. only prob is there fwd and the diffs are crap. where in stockport r u?

These engines are all but scrap, they were the day they came of the factory line. Issues with head gaskets non stop arose due to a design flaw in the oil system, which exerted way to much pressure on the heads. The turbos also have a nasty habit of going; my mate has a sick fetish for the rover coupe's and has bought four now; he has had to use bits from each one to make one decent car out of the four.

One engine had a cracked head. One head a cracked block. Another one had a blown turbo. He has ended up using the 1.6 SOHC Vtec engines that came in the 1.6 Rover models because the 2.0 litre ones are that unreliable even after they have been rebuilt from the block up.

Just stick a real engine in there! If you want a decent four pot get a cosworth lump, 2.0 litre zetec engine or a C20xe redtop.

Or sr20det for a bit or rice wrongness.

wasn't the the engine in the coupe turbo (or tomkat woo!) a honda engine?

cheap bang for buck and according to peeps on another forum there are boxes you can use as the K series was used in se7ens. Ford type 9's have a bellhousing available among others.

Along with the 1.4 rover engine, a headgasket kit was an optional extra on these. Turds.

Some of the 1.6's were honda engines, not the 2.0l's as far as i am aware.

I had one (800 turbo) and loved it to bits for a while, but the valves got sticky and had to be replaced, the turbo had to be rebuilt and the electrics were masterful in their ability to go utterly haywire. No problems with the head though or the gaskets.

When it was running well, it was a spectacularly, fast and superbly comfortable beast, but it was an expensive car to keep going. Every problem seemed to cost either £300 or £500 to put right. After about 5K worth of repairs over a couple of years I lost interest. Despite its power, I can't think it would be a suitably reliable lump to shoehorn into an E30.

I love the fact no one metioned the M42!!!!!!!

I've got a pretty good idea....find a real engine for your e30, and do the right thing, and then think about selling me the engine, so that I can get on with my current theroetical project, and put it in a metro!

It's no noisy than a 6 pot.

It's got 4 valves per cylinder.

The M42 has better hp per litre.

Why has everyone got 6 pot blinkers on?

only joking, i actually own an m44 myself, the reason for my rant is my tooth is killing me cos i tried to pull it out with some long nose pliers but give up cos the pain was/still is too much you can see the gren 318is in my avatar thing

Clove Oil. I'm not an alternative medicine hippy but Clove Oil is the bolloxs when it comes to sorting out tooth aches. Most tooth ache products use it as the active ingredient anyway. Then get yourself booked in to a dentist asap, you don't want an infection in your jaw taking out any more teeth.

too late the little bugger snapped off, anyway back to the original question, ive seen the engine in a few different cars , what is involved in wiring , i could manage getting the engine in with the correct box etc but the sight of wiring just gives me a headache, they all look the same

By accident I was replacing the steering rack in one of them. The cylinder head in these engine is huge! Is the oil leak from cylinder head gasket something normal in M-Series engines?

Apparently it is. I had a Rover 800 with that engine and it leaked oil from the head gasket. Was a shame really because it was a good engine otherwise. Was pretty quick for a big old barge......handled like a dog though!

the 2 litre turbo is a T series engine and is common to leak oil from bottom right corner of head gasket, still pullslike a train though, 0-60 should take 6.5 sec

i loved my ti. only got shut cos my mate blew box up.

Yes, but I replaced the rack in a car with na (without turbo) engine which is M-Series.
Bottom right corner you mean front side of a car near bellhousing?

they leak around the rear corner iirc, something to do with rover bodging on a twink head onto an old block, and not particularly well
