6 pot to 4 pot swap

i have a 320i which i bought for £400 to go road rallying, unfortunately after i bought it the rules changed outlawing more than 4 cylinders. the shell is solid and the reason that i went for a bmw is that it was cheap and reliable rwd fun; so now i need a cheap reliable 4 pot to put in it so i can go rallying. i would like at least the same power (not a tall order with an asthmatic m20b20) and spares must be readily available. m3 engine is way too expensive.

what are my options?

should i just buy a 318i?(i think the 318is is out of my budget range)

is there a good E36 4 pot that will go in without too much trouble?

or should i give up on bmw's and go back to golfs? :o

here's a pic of my car, 6 pot chromie wrongness!

Think you would be best off with an M10 1.8 if you cant afford the M42.
Good power can be got out of them and they are pretty nippy when running right.

Wheres abouts are you?
I know of a 318i(M10) with loads of MOT for about £200.Looks a bit scabby but would be good for ragging round!

i'm in north wales.

the m10 is the early carb engine isn't it? is that better than the later 318i engine (m40 i think)?
what engine is in the E36 318i? would that be suitable do you think?

M10 was also available as injection too, highly tunable i believe winkeye
Not sure on tuning the later M40 engine as most on here bin them in favour of 6 pot.
E36 engine is still M40 i think,just different inlet etc-still shite :D

For the hassle of changing engines, running a non standard car etc etc I think you'd be better off selling up and buying a 318is mate.

They have the Mtech suspension, disks all round, decent 16V engine and all standard so you might be allowed to run in different classes later on.

That failed, I have a 318is engine and gearbox sat around you could give me £50 for. It's a bit tired so you could spend the rest of your budget giving a work over before dropping in....
