M57TU2D30 in an E30?

Does anyone know if it's physically possible, and what the weight difference would do to the handling of the car?
I'm just eyeing this one up, as my dad's got a very tired 330d E46 automatic which could be a donor in a year or so. And the engine can be taken up to 275 horsepower without too much trouble. And it's fuel economy in something as light as an E30 would be amazing!
But would it physically fit in the engine bay? That's the question... would be very interested to know if someone's managed it

anything is possible!
but i dont know if butchering your dads e46 would be a very economical way of getting hold of a motor

Well obviously I'd ask him first - wouldn't go out in the middle of the night and steal it's engine, though doin that would have some comedy value
No, it's just all the suspension's totally shot as he used to use it on his open cast site when it was one of his company cars, and it's got damage to all the bodywork from being run into by heavy machinery (he used to like to prove a point when health and safety said the site roads were to bad for the dumptrucks to use). And then I used it as a runaround for a couple of years before I got my trusty E30 - still pulls well... But to repair it would cost more than it's worth.

"Son, you seen what's happened to my car, some buggers robbed the bloody engine!", "no, really Dad, I can't believe someone would have done that. Honestly, what's the world coming to" (Son, sneaks away quietly into garage)
More of these diesels are going to be going into E30's over the years. Tuneable and economical. Not sure what the price of a good engine would be at the moment though?

Well the price might not be a problem, just need to wait a bit for the E46 to die, and then I'd probably get the engine rebuilty anyway. By that time (around mid-2008) I'll have qualified as a doctor, so I'll have some money to spend.
Just had a look on Ebay, and the prices don't seem too bad:

That one had 60k on the clock, and is on a buy-it-now price of £995. But doesn't say what condition the engine's in. Bit of a surprise - I'd have that £1k was quite low, but then some will be pushing 8 years old now.
You got any photos of that 320i coupe with 50k on? Be interested to see what condition it's in. Mine's pushing 150k now, and shows every mile. Dents, bumps, and rust all over...

god knows,its bloody tall gearing ! it'll do 500 mph but take a week to get there !!

But with that torque and power the acceleration should still be awesome. Thanks for finding that guys, nicely answered my question! Now just need the engine, lots of time, and lots of money, and lots more mechanical knowledge....

457 Lbs/ft torque
I think the power will be quoted in Killowatts which would make it 362 Hp
Not bad for an oil burner
