Hi Just picked up a almost perfect 1987 316 coupe with 190k miles
with the m10 1766cc engine
its got auto choke etc.
is there any cheap upgrades?Ive heard about a weber carb kit?
but does it give much power increase?or reliability? or better off getting a 2002 2litre version?
this is going to be my cheapish daily driver so reliability would be the most important factor

although i do like the sound of twin weber or delortos

i have a perfect rwd setup 2.0 zetec engine available to me/has anyone ever put one into a e30?
thanks

Stolen from Fritz Bitz website (
http://www.fritzsbits.co.uk)...
"The M10 is a 1600cc engine with a small single choke carb mounted on it, for economy. Change the carb for a twin 38mm choke Webber, youâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ll spin wheels in first and second. Change the head for the one with 1800cc valves fitted, youâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ll do the same in third as well. Fit a four branch flowed exhaust manifold, a longer dwell cam, twin 45mm Webber carbs, an induction kit and youâ┚¬Ã¢”ž¢ll be cooking with the gas, and lots of it..."

				Mate,
I have been been rallying a M10 engined car for 8 years now so here goes.
It all depends on what you want but for starters yes you will want a 2002 engine(100bhp), preferably a tii one(130bhp).
For cheap bolt on power use I would find a 121 type tii engine as the compression ratio is higher than the e12 type and with a pair of Weber/Dellorto sidedraughts, 4 branch exhaust manifold and a freeflow exhaust you will see 140bhp plus.
Get your standard cam reprofiled to 284degrees you would also need eccentric valve adjusters to go with it and you should see 150bhp, with a good amount of torque low down. This should do you for a fast road car......
A 292degree cam would give you a bit more power but you are starting to need to modify other bits as well due to moving the power and torque up the rev range!! same for 300, 304, 324, 336 etc.
If you've got loads of money then you could get about 220bhp max from the M10 8valve engine, But this is pure race track stuff. For similiar power get an S14 M3 motor and you'll be able to drive it on the road.
Or for the ultimate you could find an old Schnitzer 16v engine that the 70's race and rally cars had but I've only ever seen one for sale and that was Ԛ£25k
Hope this helps
Mark

breaks the 200hp mark easily and will make some serious torque as well

what turbo would fit the M10 lump?
i know it would take it, but would need to upgrade pistons!
theres a bloke near me, who has aload of 1502 and 2002, see if he will sell one for the engine!
i feel a project coming here!

get another 2 cylinders then
remember, there's no replacement for displacement

Do you have the carb engine?
of so your compression is 9.5:1 , 318i engines are around 8.2-9.5 depending on year and if they had kat,
fit a 318i intake manifold to the engine, standalone of choice
Have a turbo adapter made,
and then general turbo conversion parts (oil drain and supply, ic and so on)
definitly bigger injectors.
stronger headbolts and possibly a MLS gasket
9.5 isnԚ´t that bad of a compression of you watch out on the ignition and have a solid inter cooling
I will be making a turbo 1.8 later this winter and coming spring
