if you have the engine it would be a shame not to fit it

Where the hell did you get an M60 for Ԛ£200!!!! Is it complete? Lucky man if you did, I would love to have a crack at this conversion but I thought it was way out of my budget due to engine costs!

Good point Toby, i bet electrics are a gripe too! I just read through your website and have been re-inspired to go the M30 route, seems the safest bet, plenty of performance for my satisfaction too! I was thinking of selling the car as the M40 is really getting on my nerves but I have just spent a few hours messing around with the car and its so easy to work on and gives a good dose of pleasure fixing it!
Sorry to hijack the thread and go O/T

Oh go M60 mate, the performance will be way better than an M30. Fuel consumption probably better too. Would be aware of the nicasil problem though. I thought they'd sorted the problem by the time they got to the M60's. Wots Glenn got an S60?

I think I may be getting a touch confused here - the M60 is the V8 found in the E31, E32 and E34 models both 3 and 4 litres. then an updated version came along in the form of the M62 with vanos for the E38, E39 and E31.
So do they produce the same power as I didn't realise there was a differnce between the E34 540i and say an E31 840ci sport late addition.
Is the M60 a 4 litre and the M62 the 4.4 litre? I know the 4.4 produces 286bhp and that is the spec I would love to have in my touring but I think its way beyond my capabilities and probably budget, where as an M30 would be easier and cheaper especially with the help of those in the know on this site!

4.4 must produce more than 286????????
300 min I would have thought.

correct, the m60/m62 both produce the same power,
but the m62 produces more torque

Is it a large difference in torque - its torque im interested in, not outright "rev the balls off it" power, and is the M60 a strong engine and viable transplant Glenn? M62 would be a nicer idea but I think they are too pricey to get hold of for me, could be wrong though.....

I thinks it's in the region of 30lbft. difference, although I'd have to check. Worth it if you can afford the engine. Most M62s I've seen have been Ԛ£2k and up with (gearbox).
286bhp is plenty and they prolly deliberately settled on that (the M1 had 286bhp as quoted from the factory, as did the E28 M5 and later E36 M3). I'd guess you could *easily* break the 300bhp barrier with bolt ons (manifold, exhaust, induction, remap).
Knowning BMW, it was probably also a German tax / insurance break point.

Ah well - my minds been made up for me today as I have just bought an E32 730ise MANUAL for beans! Going to strip it soon for all the relevant bits I need in order to do the M30 3.5 conversion
I can't wait but its going to be a slow process collecting all the bits I need before starting it - when I do start it, I will begin my own build in progress thread!
Bloody excited though!!!

I have done a M60 conversation to an E30. I have the motor with a 6-speed gearbox.
I'll post more pictures when I have time for it.

It was the other way around.
M60 - 3.0 & 4.0 litres, nikasil blocks
M62 - 3.5 & 4.4 litres, alusil blocks.

The later M62 4.4 (as in the latest shape 545i) has 330bhp.
Vanos came in in '98, the first ones didn't have it. Vanos engines have more torque and produce peak power at lower revs.

You haven't seen that car at "ace cafe". Where is it?
The car is LHD and hell no I'm not from Norway.
