hi, trying to evauate / choose differnent bmw engines for a convertion, where can i find out weights of different engines.

mainly like to know the weights of:

e36 m3 3.0,

m20 2.5 / 2/7,

E38 v12 (think 495lb)

and the 4.0 and 4.4 v8

any answers greatly appreciated.

think id like to use the 4.4 v8 the most, anyone know how much is involved. not shuy but at the same time dont have a workshop and all the tools.

Weights - I suppose Mass is the correct term - as follows

M20 2.7 120kg 190bhp ( conservative ) = 1.58 hp/kg

M30 3.5 140kg 218bhp = 1.55hp/kg

M60/2 145kg 286bhp = 1.97hp/kg (hartge 5.0's get 385bhp on stock zorst )

M73 146kg 321bhp = 2.19hp/kg

S50 3.0 155kg  286bhp = 1.84hp/kg

S62 5.0 158kg 400bhp = 2.53hp/kg

Looks like V8 or V12 then - remember a v8 with a 'charger can spit out 450 bhp - E30 with powerbuge anyone ???

These figures are for undressed engines - ie no manifolding, injection , alternators etc. Some of the more modern engines have lots of extra kit that can be downsized or discarded, eg air pumps, huge alternators

It is safe to assumed that the amount of weight added to 'dress ' an engine will be roughly the same for all the above give or take 20kg either way.

Cheers for now

Phil

Firstly hi all i am new here.
I readed up that u are serching for an eng swap..i thing its better to go for a euro 3.2ltr 321hp...very reliable very torque and responsive...leave the V8...OR think about E34 M5 3.8...its also a good idea..i had in my M40 an 325 it was quit heavy and the car had that feeling of weight...so :) i putted a quite tunned M3 2.3 s14...impressive difference...but now i am thinking of M5 3.8 or E36 M3 3.2...LOL..or a near race spec 2.5 s14..Thats my opinion mate..

s14's and s88's are very hard to come by and too expensive to be honest

Bassically if u are comparing the 2.5 e30 with M engines for sure is differences but for 4.4 V8 and E36 3.2 i dont think its going to be any important differences...
By the way...how much is an engine M3 E36 3.2 euro in good condition is costing here in U.K??...because in my country maybe the price differs...

talking about the 3.0 m3 lump i know of one that might be for sale its a bare eng and needs new big ends. any idea what this is woth?

think when it comes to it im going to use a 4.4 v8 because of the relaxed power and torque that is on offer and the engine will be cheep too!
