635csi motor?

Hi guys

Can use a 1982 635csi motor for a 3.5l conversion into my touring? I read its easier to break an E34 535i but I don't know the reason why? Are these engines not the same?

I would appreciate your help because I have the chance of this 6 series and an E32 730i manual and therefore I could mate the two together if this is a route I could take?

Thanks for the help

Rob

the e34 sump is the one you need, with oil pick up in the right place.

the e32 sump should be ok

so i could do a conversion using htese two cars then? I could use the sump off the E32 and put it on the motor from the 635 or does it not work like this?
Basically I need to know whether I go for these cars or just wait untill a suitable E34 535i manual comes up for sale?

1982 is on the changeover from jetronic (i think) to motronic with 635s. if it;s jetronic forget it, way too old and the inlet plenum is the wrong shape.

if the 635 is auto forget it too. assuming it's motronic, these older gen engines have motronic speed/reference sensors on the gearbox bellhousing. the e34/e32 engines don't as the sensor is at the front, but older 635s do, the e34/e32 manual box won't be any use with the older motronic engine as they don't have mounts for these sensors.

i'd leave it myself. other small reasons like the older engines have a water pipe on the rear of the head which causes clearance issues.

as you suggest, e34 535i manual the way forward...

Cheers mate thats exactly the advice I was looking for!

I think I had realised that this evening anyway, seems to be a couple of cheap E34's knocking around so that's definately my plan of action now!

Thanks again

if the E32 manual is cheap, it may well be worth getting that for the manual parts. i bought a 375i auto for Ԛ£100 for the engine but spent over twice that tracking down the various manual parts needed. a clutch is Ԛ£100-180, + prop for donor (Ԛ£50) + flywheel + gearbox etc etc etc. also, if you get the whole setup from the 730i, you can then pick up a bare 3.5 lump and an ecu without much hassle to get the complete setup.

my parts came from a huge load of various donors. (E28 M535i rad/bottom hose/clutch/flywheel, E30 M3 prop/exhaust, E32 735i engine/loom/ecu etc, E34 530i gearbox etc etc!!!)

a single donor will make life a lot easier if you can find one and like you say a single E34 535i manual will be the best donor, if you can find one that's been looked after but now broken, this i failed on!!!

Yeh Gareth, I must admit that this is causing me some dilema, I know this 730i is going to be kicking around for a while so I do have time on my side to have a good search for the E34 (and get my MGB GT sold which is taking up valuable garage space!).

I think I'll search and search but then if nothing fruitful turns up then I will bag the 7 for the reasons you highlighted.

Thanks for your help and insight!

Incidently, what sort of pace can I expect from this conversion - my mate has an E34 535i sport auto and it feels swift, but I imagine in an E30 it's a proper flying machine with all that torque combined with light-weight shell? It seems a no-brainer conversion in terms of acheiving a cheap sleeper car. In-gear acceleration must surely be impressive, if it feels as swift as a 330d in-gear sprints then I'll be well chuffed! :D

mine (E34 engine in standard tune) would do 60mph in six seconds dead and indicate 150 fairly easily (that was on the rev limiter, so although it probably was going slower there was more to come)

pretty much identical through the gears to a friend's 1990 911 3.6, but i'll beat him once this turbo's on

Awesome mate! Your turbo conversion looks mint, I have been following your thread
Standard tune sounds quick enough for me, if I can acheive those figures you said, then we're talking sausages!!! Thats exactly the pace I was hoping for - 6 seconds dead is plenty respectable enough, lots of traffic light fun and definate chav car killer (especially if I leave the 318i badge on the boot), not that i'd condone that type of behaviour...... winkeye

Pure class, were they cecotto wheels? I just noticed your based in Leicestershire, where abouts if you don't mind me asking? I'm in Loughborough so maybe I could tap you up face to face for some information on doing the conversion when I am ready to do it?

Tell me where to go if that sounds cheeky!

Cheers
Rob

The old m30 engines (the ones that came in e23/e28) will suit only the manual gearbox from old engines - the ones that have sockets for those sensors. In my case the only problem was finding the right flywheel (as i have no donor car i had to collect all the bits), because the flywheel i have has no snag for one of these sensors. The sollution is to weld it to the flywheel and then get the flysheel ballanced. But anyway it's rather big ball ache..

Yeh Andy335iTouring, I pm'd you not too long ago, we said we should arrange a meet because i'd like to see your car too for inspiration and advice! - its exactly how mines gona be (except mines laser blue).

Out of interest, does anyone know how many 3.5l tourings there are on the site or even in the country? It still must be a fairly rare contraption?!!

I suppose it's O/T but it would be cool to arange an East midlands meet, perahps I'll search the 'Meets' forum and see whats happening!

Cheers all

Agreed.

The chances of getting hold of a nice corrosion free early M30B34 are pretty slim now. Also ,don,t forget the E32/4 3.5 engines have larger intake ports and 47mm inlet valves as oppsoed to 46mm fitted to the earlier engines- this all helps. They are also smoother running, and there is a good chance you can find one that has had a recent cam / rocker repacement.

this is what you want.

looks like a manual as there's a clutch res visible

67p no bids at the moment

much better than messing about with ancient 635s!

Thnanks for that info cpc, i'm definately going to ignore the 635 now!

I saw that 535i Toby and it looks like it could be a bit of a steal - maybe I'll ask some questions about it!

Thaks again for everyones input

Cheers mate I will take you up on that offer for sure! - I missed that 535i that Toby put a link to above to ebay because of storage issues, must sell one car before I get another! winkeye
