I would love to have all opinions from the engine guru's! And all E30 zoners!

Im going to put a 2.7 into my 318i convertible and the best way I think is to put a 2.5 in then 2.7 it!

What my plan is......buy a 325i full car, put all the 325i running gear into the cab then drive around for a bit.......then take it out and 2.7 it! Is that daft??

All views welcome guys!

If anybody thinks of a better why then lets here them!

Owned an M52 328 for the last few years and is an excellent engine apart from the flat spot at about 2500-3000rpm and nikasil! Probably better off with M50. Not as strangled and pretty much the same power output. If doing M52 defo get the M50 manifold in there and remap to get rid of flatspot! Hmmmm wish i could have kept the lump and running gear out of it to transplant! Had new short block and replaced all of the hydraulic lifters!!

If you go M52 just make sure its post '97 (they changed the liners) or already had the short engine changed. There is a way of telling if its nikasil or not visually:

how long has the nikasil thing been about now?! if they were gonna go they'd have gone by now, imo its a non issue now. it was down to high sulpher content of fuel, which has now been rectified iirc.

think it also mainly was an issue with town cars

Nikasil has been about from the first 328's to end of '97. Some were fine as Jhonno pointed out it was sulphur content that caused the problem. I'd still be careful picking up a 2nd hand lump.

Most were replaced under warranty but if there were no signs of it a lot weren't. BMW didn't officially recognise it until quite recently and then only offered replacements to cars with full BMW sh and under 100k on the clock. They relaxed this a bit to cars with full sh not just BMW but this wasn't until after i'd forked out the best part of Ԛ£1.5k to get it replaced (went at 66k)!!! Think they've stopped courtesy replacement altogether now. There are still cars running Nikasil with no problem. Just be careful!
