Engine Management Tuning

For anyone interested in programming aftermarket ECU's (Megasquirt etc.) or simply interested in understanding how ECU's work, I can thoroughly recommend the book Engine Management Advanced Tuning (see here) by Greg Banish.

I picked a copy of this book up last weekend and have been reading it during my evenings. The book, thus far, appears not to have any information that I don't have in any of my other books, but does present the information in a reader friendly and logical manner that (imo) makes it ideal for first time readers on the subject. The content is easily understood and fairly non-mathematical. After reading this book you'll understand such things as why temperature compensation is so important, and exactly why it is that ignition timing is required to vary with both engine load and rpm.

There's a similar Haynes manual written by Dave Walker too. It even comes with a trial version of some mapping software with a kind of simulated dyno so you can have a play at making a map.
