The M3 ECU does have an immobaliser built in, it's called the EWS system, so if you are looking to buy an engine already removed from a car, make sure you get the ECU, loom, key, receiver ring from around ignition barrel, EWS boxes too. They all have to be from the same car or it will never start.

These cars came with an immobliser built into the engine ECU,BMW call it EWS.
It is essential that you get the entire system from the donor.
Engine loom
ECU
EWS module
Surround to ign lock
Correct key
You will also need to understand enough about modern car electronics to make it all work....

might be best to buy a crashed m3 then and strip it,do all the m3,s have immobalisers in them,if so could i get a programable ecu and sort it that way, remember its going in my opel manta, which one is best 6 pot to get.

i have a spare 3.2 evo ecu/ews set-up.
it's the ecu/ews grey box and black box/ key.
pm me if you need it.
if you go with the 'newer' e46 m3 engine, the ecu can be re-flashed so that ews isn't an issue. give 'uwem3' a shout, he has a 'contact' that can do this.
