the e36 engines go into the e30 with an e34 sump fitted to them with the correct oil pick up
i dont know if the e28 m20 sump is any different to the e30's but that could be an option if the sumps are different
if that doesnt work, then its time for a custom sup, but there's no point going for an m20 when the m50's and m52's drop straight in
just put in an m52 into the compact like i did

i would but i have a whole e30 just sitting there and cant find a sheel for it atm but me mate has a compact . my mate will make a sump for me so sump wise should be ok . just not to sure what prop to use been told to use the 2.8's prop out of e36. or could i use the 1.6 prop or my prop out of my 2.5?

You could almost certainly pick up a 2.5 m50 & fit it for less money (& certainly less effort) than getting the m20 in there... Sell the m20 to an E30 owner.
