my mate has a 325i touring as a donor car. its got the 2.5/2.7 stamped on the head. Is this ideal for a 2.7 conversion?

That will be an 885 head,then.
Depends on how deep your mate's pocket is and what he requires from his engine.
Would suggest that he/you read 'stonesies' thread in the engine swaps section detailing his 2.8 build.
The crank required for a 2.7 is now in the same catagory at hens teeth,whereas the 2.8 crank is far more available.

The fact it has 2.7 stamped on the head means nothing. It's an 885 2.5 head full stop. Going by the Mr's Everetts wiki, the 885 is not the best route but is usable.

You've really got to decide how you want to get to 2.7 really.

Either use a stock 525 eta bottom end and then decide if you want to use a titivated 731head or stock 885 head.

OR use the eta crank in your 325 block with 320 rods, deck the block and fit a vernier pulley.

OR use a 324 TD crank (as alpina used on the C2's) in your 325 block with 320 rods, deck the block and fit a vernier pulley.

Or better still, find a c2.7 lump complete.

now that would be a nice find but the chances of finding one are less than finding an eta bottom end.

My 2.7 cost around £1500 three years ago,there's more detail in the wiki,but I have about 175bhp and a very 'flat' torque curve,pulls very strongly from 1500-2000rpm.
As I remember 'Stonesies' build,he has used a catcam and this has moved the power band a little higher,but still a very good torque curve and more than 200bhp for a cost of £2000 or so.
Remember that M50/M52 will give similar results for less cash outlay...

Mine has a deffinate surge at about 3.5K but pulls well below that too, im very happy with it but already considering megasquirt to get the AFM out of the airflow.

I would give serious consideration to the 24v lumps if i was to do it again though, despite the alloy blocks being a little fragile compared to the iron blocks (if you cook it you've f*cked it)

you'll want custom pistons and the longer 2.5 conrods if you want to make higher power imo

Maybe the standard 2.5 may be an option if everything is too expensive

didint realise the ETA bottom ends were becoming so rare... ive just recently purchased one which im planning on building a 2.7 from. im not chasing big power but im tempted on building a 2.8 as ive got the chance of a good complete engine and box for £150 might just sell the parts i wont use and hopefully have the crank for free
