M52 swap cluster light problem

Hello!

After a M52B28 swap into an E30 316 and switching on the ignition, the lights that indicate charging (battery), handbrake, brake pads, and low break fluid all light up in the instrument cluster. But the thing is that they are approx. 50% dim. When I pull the handbrake, or shorten the brake fluid level sensor, the corresponding lights become much brighter - as bright as they should be, when indicating a problem.

I have tried a different cluster, but to no avail. Also the engine starts and runs fine and the speedo/tach/fuel gauges are working. The alternator seems to be ok as it is supplying the battery with a charge.

Ideas, anyone? :(

Cheers

I'd start by checking all the grounds, there should be a big one to the engine which I'm guessing is there if it cranks and charges OK, and a smaller one as part of the loom - perhaps thats the one thats missing? Things will try to find earth in unexpected ways when proper earths are bad/missing...
