M20B25 Conversion, list of problems gets longer

My car started life as an M10 powered 316 coupe. It was fitted with an M20B25 engine from a 1989 325i by the previous owner. It has been off the road for the past two years and it has a few problems.

1. There is a whistling noise coming from the intake manifold. I was thinking it could be due to a worn gasket.

2. The car doesn't idle smoothly.

3. There is a lot of blue smoke coming from the exhaust. Possibly burning oil.

4. The fuse box appears to be missing a few fuses.

5. There is excessive play in the steering wheel.

6. Electric windows, central locking, heaters, and dials dont work.

7. The cooling fan is constantly on.

8. The wipers can't be turned off.

Any suggestions as to how i can resolve some of these problems will be appreciated.

Tom

1. New gasket time
2. Because of the above most likely.
3. At startup? If so, valve stem seal, all the time? Worn oil control rings.
4. Get a pocket full of fuses from the scrappy.. Originality is key here.. You do want all of your fuses to be BMW dont you? (am I just sad??? LOL)
5. Check the steering guibo first. ECP do a rebuild kit, otherwise check the track rods/ends and rack for play.
6. Check again after fitting genuine BMW fuses (again, I'm sad!)
7. BrianMoore and Ian are the experts here, I'm not much help.
8. Errr... Relay of stalks probably at fault?

Big Bavarian Beauties are my E30 breakers of choice. We should all support them by giving them business as it is really in all of our best interests, in the future it'll be guys like these that are keeping our classic cars on the road and the scene alive!

Hope some of that helps mate.

Jai

Cheers for the info mate.

Believe it or not this is just the tip of the iceberg. The underbody is rusted fairly badly the rear passanger footwell has a 5'' diameter hole in it. I'm going to strip out the interior tomorrow to see the full extent of the damage. At least the arches seem solid enough.

It has been fitted with a hydraulic handbrake which isn't working either

Do Big Bavarian Beauties have a website?

As J says, or could be as I had at the weekend, the washers and wipers would not stop after coming on randomly. Changed the big blac relay in the fusebox, job sorted :)

Started striping the interior today to assess the condition of the car

The passanger side arch is solid

The boot is alright only surface rust

It does have a leak but that is probably because of the aeriel

A new parcel shelf is needed

Drivers side arch not looking too healthy

Does anyone know about these ecus?

I managed to strip most of the interior however i'm struggling to remove the carpet in one piece. Does anyone know how to get it out withoul cutting?

Will it be difficult to put the carpet back in when i need to?

9. There is oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold causing it to smoke

This is the reason for the play in the steering wheel
Image

At least the rocker cover is shiny

What should i do with the arch. I was thinking about cutting out the rust and fibreglassing it.

There is a lot of water under the carpets so i obviously have a leak somewhere, but i ran the hose over it yesterday and couldn't find where it was getting in any suggestions

Cut as much of the rust away as possible then make a cardboard pattern of the hole thats left. Use this to cut the new metal to shape then weld it it job done. If the leak is under the carpet it could be the heater matrix. Hope not for your sake its a dash out job. The carpets are a nightmare to get out. You need to cut around the heater matrix it makes it easier to get in and out. You need make a small cut so that the carpet will come around the steering column. Sit in the back and pull the carpet up and back will get it out. Hope this helps mate

Cheers lads.

Today, i'll try and get the carpet out without too much cutting and hopefully attack some of that rust.

I will update this thread if i uncover anymore problems
