Just following on from a thread I just hijacked... (sorry)

Which engine transplant would you do to your E30?

And a quick pro's and con's on said transplant...

Discuss.....

PS. No slanging matches, or teddies out of the pram gents...

Nope, M20 only for a genuine sport (non birmingham spec), non-sport would get a M50 for budget bruising, or S14 for retro cool like Demlot, or for balls to the wall S52.

Sorry for my ignorance, but which cars are these engines out of?

M42?, M50?, S52?, S14.....

Depends what I wanted the car for.

My track slaaag has an M20, but if I wanted more muscle, I'd go for an M30. These are both "wrong" choices, I know I should have an S14 or an M50 for racing, and an S52 for muscle. It's a personal choice.

M50 is from E36 325 and E34 525 :D

depends on your budget mate!
the one that makes the most sense is the M50/M52.

M42: 318iS

M50: E36 325i/E34 525i

S52: E36 M3 Evo

S14: E30 M3

I will be going M50 one day, excellent all round engine, correct number of cylinders, correct number of valves per cylinder.

But if money was no object; S62

M42 - 1.8 from a 318iS
M50 - comes mostly in 2.0 and 2.5, found in the E36
S52 - 3.2 from an E46 M3
S14 - 2.3 from an E30 M3
M30 - all sizes, from allsorts

id put a cosworth engine into an e30. big power easily/cheaply had in future tuning potential. it also has that wow factor when folk look under the bonnet.its a racing pedigree engine thats in a simple basic form.

This, sadly, is good advice. It's a fairly lightweight engine, so handling wouldn't be too adversely affected like dropping in the massive iron structure that is the M50. Average reliability, but fairly easy to fix if it does ever go.

Cosworth power is good.... about 220bhp out of the box aren't they?

Reminds me of watching the Sierra's on tele when I was a kid.

What I find strange is that no-one really seems to fettle the standard engine.

Doesn't it stand tuning very well?

Loads of people have on here, it holds up well but NA tuning is more expensive than dropping in another engine. There's M20s stroked up to 3 litres on here, as well as an 800bhp 2.7 turbo beast that'll do 10 second quarter miles.

I am, it's still in the build stage, but conservative power estimates for when its finished are around 260 - 300 horses. If I still think it's gutless after that then I'll just tune it more.

Terminology question again....

What is a "stroker?"

An engine that's had its displacement increased by increasing the length of the stroke (although most have increased bores too).

Changing cranks to give a longer stroke - more cc's

Apart from changing the cranks, what else does it involve?

Not for the faint hearted then.

I'm starting to see why people just drop a bigger lump in.

Ah, just a couple of hundred on a stg 1 chip and -31 actuator with 16psi and 270bhp (maybe a ickle more - I have seen 290 out of one) is enough lol. I've never seen a stg 3 "330bhp" hit 330bhp yet.

M30 is cheap and easy to do, loads of bottom end torque, you can cruise round town in 5th at 25-50 mph all day and then boot it on the motorway, i turning just over 2000rpm at 70mph and about 3000rpm for 100mph.
People have different ideas on what to go for, but its down to personal preference on what you want the car for.

I need mine to be a daily driver...

I'm not one to go on the track, or down the strip at the pod.

But (and it is a but) I do like to win the traffic light GP's sometimes... :P

But I still need it to be reliable, I don't like doing stuff to an engine and it turn out to be delicate or unreliable.
