charger fitted - filled with fresh oil - forgot to check before! - charger exhaust manifold visible intake manifold hidden below - probably going to have intake filter nr bulkhead

dipstick was a real arse to move now faces forward and required some angle grinder action on blower subframe

Image

intercooler fitted - 3 brackets brazed on with rubber bushes - oil cooler moved to new location

front metal valence panel ditched - and cut outs have been made to improve flow to intercooler from front bumper
spoiler assembly - also flash db7 grille (freebie) has been put in front of intercooler to protect from debris etc
will upload pic later

tonight - belt to be disconnected - oil/filter changed - car to be driven over to a mates tonight/tomorrow to look at arch clearance
problem on rear rims - probably brute strength solution will be employed - only just fouls on inner lip under serious compression

f/g bonnet will be fitted if there is time - started last night

plan is for this friday am start at ants - for:
- intercooler pipework
- sort intake to blower manifold
- fit blow off valve
- fit coil pack and wasted spark
- sort out a couple of base maps

- and drive home - well optimistic - but hopefully it really will be a good friday and trackday is booked on 15th april
so ideally want to run it around and go through all the problems etc

we'll run 5" pulley for start - then think about switch to 6"
Good work, tho doesnt a smaller pulley make more boost?

i'm guessing he is talking about the crank pulley.
Larger crank pulley = higher boost
smaller charger pulley =more boost
and vise versa

guys bigger crank pulley = more/higher boost

car was driven over to ants yesterday - good to see A-tech work on bank holidays! car had i/c mounted but we are short of some piping so it's going to get ordered/collected tuesday

on the way over - first time the car has run for ages - the newly located oil cooler sprung a leak in the core - so after a bit of head scratching it was ditched - as it's value/efficiency was questioned. anyway more weight saving! and if the oil does run hot - i'll get a mocal or similar and would not want to mount it in the front

other issue was that the oil return pipe was still leaking so cable tie and jubilee clip in true bodge fashion was used to compress the spring which seems to have done the trick

ant looked at the wiring i did after the alternator was relocated and was not very impressed :) hopefully he'll remove a load of the legacy stuff from the redundant moronic set up like IC plug etc - which will tidy it up

also new 8" rims foul the rear arches even though the lip has been hammered away - and they have filler than i first thought so looks like another dead e30 is going to have to give up it's arches - won't be in time for trackday next sunday so the trusty BBS's will be dusted off - which is a downer cos the new rims have fresh R888's and the tyres on the BBS's are shagged

looks like new injectors are going to be needed so some 42lb honeys will be fitted in the week. real pisser is that i cannot take any more time off work next week - so ant and david will be the first to see the car breathe first in its new incarnation hopefully on wednesday evening...

like all these projects when you get to the final furlong its the little details which burn time but hopefully we really are close - just read bottlecap's thread on e30tech - what crap luck - hope you get it running again soon dude

Just about to leave for Ants - initial running looks very positive. Final issues to sort are related to controlling pressures when the throttle is closed. Caused because the throttle-body is after the supercharger.

Saw this conversion yesterday at the A-Tech workshop. Looks like a compact and concise install. Sounds fruity and also as if it has a science fiction style internal whirlwind - exactly how I'd imagine 'warp drive'.

It made my mate jump back in fear when it started up which had me chuckling up my sleeve.

Keep up the good work guys. You'd got it all together and running and were securing that join as we left. What happened next?

Just to let you know this one has gone quiet due to an annoying electrical short that has so far destroyed two ECU's Ant is tracking down between his other jobs. I am also starting work on an additonal, bigger blow-off valve to manage pressure surge on throttle lift-off.

Watch this space - initial drives of the car before the electrical fault were encouraging to say the least. I don't usually make use of these funny things but - - seemes very appropriate....!

Sounds good  , just looking at the arrangement and would i be right in saying that you running the throttle body after the supercharger?

If so, have you found it to run ok when your at part throttle and quite high reves say when you had the engine held in the power band with the revs high but the throttle almost closed when your about to nip out and over take some one (the engine would'nt be in vacume as such to open the BOV) but the charger is still making more pressure/air than the engine can use, have you found that the boost spikes or the charger starts to stall or belt slip or does it seam to be ok? this was one of my main conserns with running the throttle body down stream with a positive displacement charger which is why i put mine up stream. :D

Matt, the bypass issues on part throttle are sorted, twinned BOV's used but one has mods internally to let it function as required.

the big HKS BOV is the vent on upchange when in boost and high Throttle openings.

The conversion is completed( and has been for a month or so) major stumbling block is the lack of a valid MOT.

Soon, all shall be revealed :thumb:

i did'nt relise it was set up to bypass. i see now

I'am trying to get my head round the best way to do mine with the centirugal type charger and down stream ITB's.

Suppose i could just copy the way thorny motorsport do the e46 M3 conversions...... :D

What mods are needed to get it to function correctly as a bypass valve, softer/shorter spring?

Would have thought if you make it too soft then the depending on the pressure on either side of the valve you may get it bypassing due to the boost pressure being greater than the spring pressure, if you got a adjustable BOV you could adjust it to suit.

Ive used a baileys one like you have JK with the manifold conected to the side port of the BOV and the bottom port connected before the supercharger but after the throttle body, i did have it set up the other way but it didnt seam to work as i had manifold vacume sucking the vavle down from the bottom port and only manifold vacume trying to open the port from the normal top conection, this plus the spring pressure ment the valve was being held shut by the spring as the to manifold vacumes cancel each other out ( bailey told me it would not pass until it had 39 psi pushing against the spring! so its quite strong)

Have you thought of buying the unit from the cooper s JK? its not overly big and has hose tail type conections on it and what looks like a singel vacume take off point :D

ok after a false start in april and well documented bad karma i really dont want to tempt fate BUT - MOT booked for tomorrow am - fingers crossed! winkeye - might be driving it tomorrow - can't wait

not driven it yet - and only heard it run via phone - which suggests 98db days are gonna be out of the question

Well done Ross!!

I hear it's almost there, the vids sound awesome, damn that thing is loud!!

Good luck with the MOT!

thanks mark

i am sooo excited boring the tits off everyone at work - they are all leaving early with a catatonic expression

gotta say dont think it's have half the grunt of your monster -would love to have seen the guy in the scooby after your recent sortie in your e30 :D

next steps include a bigger pulley that i have to try and then already the inevitable thoughts re rotrex are occuring - got a customer who does a lot of conversions on jags - they have done loads of dyno work on eatons vs rotrex - eaton=50% efficiency - rotrex=78% - up to 600bhp with twin(i think) rotrex on new jag xk lump 8O

anyway it's all bollocks really - i really ought to drive the bloody thing first - and see if it's still fun to drive winkeye

Racecar- you conversion looks cool i must also confess that even though i am happy with what ive done i would now like to do it again with a rotex type charger on a low comp lump to realy get some power. do you know alot about rotex or had dealings with them??

guys update tomorrow - progress is being made - she runs but hunts at 3.5k under load - hopefully addressing/logging tomorrow - when running ok - still makes big boost after 6k - sounds ridiculous to the extent that for low profile with neighbours tomorrow will have to go further afield to do some logging and start dealing with more mapping issues - and will upload some footage - noise is similar to 30's straight 6 blown vintage racecar - neighbours are getting pissed off :D

big up to ant and david for input so far - when wet just wants to swap ends - stealth thing gone out of window - not a car to take to boozer and have a few jars

the IAT do go high so the timing is pulled to compensate and save the engine from pinking damage, few quirks to iron out still but the concept is proven
