hey (first time caller, long time listener)

i was wondering if anyone has turbocharged an m20b20 in a 320i.

i know, get a 325i, and turbo that (and thats the plan)...but i'm interested in what results these engines can produce turbocharged.

So if you've done it, or heard of any, i'd like to hear from you.
preferably with what work was done and some power and torque figures.

cheers
antony.

If you build a kit as a 2.5 kit then go for it, otherwise don´t waste your money building a kit you´ll end up not using

1bar will show about 240hp I belive,

the 2.0 has flat pistons and the 2.5 has dished, i believe that it makes a difference power wise ??

flathead 731 was for more torque out of the smaller 2.0 lump.

compression ratios aint too different between the two (2.0 and 2.5)

well my overall goal would be to have a 2.5 turbo (or 2.7 or 2.8, but unlikely as stroker parts are hard to come by/exspensive over here). it would be interesting to put the turbo kit on the m20b20 first, as i get funds for the M20B25. instead of getting the M20B25, and then the turbo:)

i'm curious as what results that would produce?

cheers

1bar 2.0 = 240hp
1bar 2.5 = 350hp if well tuned with a properly sized turbo

Theres a first time for everything.

Gunni, you would need to do quite a bit of work internally to achieve 350hp on an M20.

I don´t think so,
What´s needed is lower compression trough a MLS gasket for instance, properly sized turbo that will not strangle flow at all, "3 exhaust , 1bar would probably be reached at 3600-4000rpm and continue to redline

The pistons and rods can handle the power, it´s the turbo setup that will say if you can and can´t get the
desired horsepower at the boost level you plan on using

The persuit for low end and no lag using a small turbo is the high end HP figure enemy.
I have not seen any evidence of stronger internal parts required to get to 350hp.

#1. What kind of max power do you want
#2. What kind of power delivery do you require
#3. What kind of low end and lack of turbo lag do you desire
#4. What engine management will you be using

Those things will dictate how things will be needed to be built.

If you want something like Turbo-Brown has you WILL require two turbos.
you can do the low end with a small single one, and the high end with a bigger one,
you can´t get both using a single turbo..
And you can´t get no lag or smooth power delivery with a fairly big one,
wich is required to get 350hp without issues on stock internals.
With great challenges comes great engineering.

I can't see it having a long life span tho. that is 100% increase in power. i know it is a achievable but for how long.

That totally depends on the tuning and frequence of oil changes for instance,
and probably most important the current state of the engine,

Obviously a engine with bad rings will surtenly not last long as blow by will simply be to much and
will only go up,

the m20b20 has been turboed before, and there has been a couple of zoners on here who have done it.

as the m20 lumps are the same it would be fairly easy to go from the 2.0 to 2.5 turbo at a later date. using megasquirt for your ecu would mean re-mapping would not be a major problem.

choosing your turbo is the important factor although to start with id say a t34 something from a cosworth would be good start point.

From some things I've read 350hp is pushing it on an M20 and no I have nothing to back this up.

If i don't ask questions how do i learn?

from a thread on another forum about manifold adapters, i know not B20's but just to give a ballpark idea:

Engine: M20b25 with stock internals.
Turbo adaptor: Home-made copy of the manifolds seen on ebay.
Turbo: TurboXS T04e .57 trim / T3 .63 Stage III
Boost: 15psi
RWHP: 309
ECU: Megasquirt (fuel) & Eletromotive Wasted Spark Ignition

Engine Designation: 2.7i
Turbo Adaptor brand: 666
Turbo Size: T3/T4
Boost PSI: 15 most of the time.
RWHP: 320 / 360
ECU: Megasquirt N Spark

Engine: M20b25 with stock internals, only mod being metric blues.
Turbo adaptor: Jon Volk 666 Fab Adapter (FIRST prototype)
Turbo: t3/T04e 57 trim Stage III wheel .63 exhaust housing
Boost: 10psi (Only going up from here...)
RWHP: 238
ECU: Megasquirt (fuel) & soon to be sparked and dyno tuned

interesting to see how little difference the 2.7 makes in power. is the '/260' torque? Im sure it that is where it would shine.

has any one got any links maybe about b20 turbo's. it's more of an interest thing.

Hi, everybody.
I'm new here, and firstly I beg your pardon for my english is poor. Sorry, just learning it.

Antony:
My car is an old 84' m20b20 turbo.Far not finished, but working. I think the tuning never ends :) .
It's L-Jetronic, Garrett T3, and an IC. 10 psi boost for the moment. Runs well.
Most of things done myself (financial problems).I had some problem's, but now is OK.
If you have any questions,I answer with pleasure.

Any pics?

There is one other M20B20 turbo but I think Spoox broke it and sold all of the parts.

Welcome too

sorry for just putting in my 2cents worth, but while the topic is being discussed i thought i'd ask. what do you guys think of kkk turbos, more specifically the k27? porsche used these on their le mans winning 956's, now obviously those engines are quite different to the m20b20 to say the least. but they were 2.6L motors running a twin turbo set up.

i was wondering how maybe one of these would perform on a b20? does anbody have any knowledge on these turbos? oh, and incase anybody would like to know why kkk, its good enough for porsche and i thought it would be nice to keep it all german under the hood.

kind regards

Well,I done some pics, but almost all of changes is home made by me, it's not a "showcar" engine bay, so you really wanna see?

Seba

The 3K k27 is too big for m20b20 street (no race), it's good for m20b25 and b27. You get boost on 25i around 3500 rpm (and is good up to the ceeling, I seew it, one of my friends took me for a ride-325i, K27,)-> on 20i is equal with about 4500 rpm. This K27 was on bmw 745i engines, they had 3,2 and 3,5 litre engines. I have a K28 in garage, it's a littlebit larger, then the K27, will put up later, when upgrade my b20 to b25 or b27 8)

think a k27 was used on the old 3.5 litre 745i limo

maybe a bit big for a 2.0, but i've nothing to back that up, need to find out the actual specs

i'd be tempted to stick to a T3 pattern exhaust housing though, gives many more options if you want to change turbo :D

Edit: didn't read the last post!

My T3 is a bit too small even for 20i, run great from 2000 up to 5000 rpm, but after it run's out of power ( I think small the compressor).

mine is a t04e (i think!), T3 pattern turbine housing, and it seems happy enough to 6k at 7psi on my 3.5 engine

I know, all go to one, no good, but in practice, I see only one drawback: it's much more hotter, then the older. Must fabricate heatshields.(One friend fired up his ignition wires.) Boost with new comes earlier :)

jar-la, very interesting upgrade dude! :thumb: Is that on an older L-Jetronic 320i, and did you need new engine management?

Also what sort of performance are you getting from it?

Cheers!
