not sure if you'd need the 6sp manual box from the E39 540? was the manual box in the E34 540 a 6spd too?

I'm sure, because I have one 6speed from an E34.

The E39 M5 gearbox fits to the M60 engine. An the 6spd from E39 540i.

Its the Getrag 280 / 6/ 6 speed.

A lot of 6 speed BMW's use it, but not sure which bell housing you will need.

The Getrag 280 / 6/6 was used on the -

E34 3.8 M5
E34 540i
E 36 3.2 EVO
E39 M5
E39 540i
E46 M3

And a few others that escape me, but its the bellhousing you need to make sure fits.
