E30 335 turbo,??? anyone know why you shouldnt???

right, i am really really liking the idea of getting my mitts on the 3.5 six pot from a 5 series, and rammin it in to my 1988 2.0/ 2.5 with the turbo on for extra good measure!

i hope this is gonna be possible, and i know anything is possible! But can anyone help me out?i am trying to find out any serious problems i am going to find, like the bulkhead has gotta be hammered out the way? or there wont be any room for the turbo? erm, no room for an intercooler, gotta move the master cylinder you know what i mean. i know the engine mounts have gotta be changed, but that sort of thing is fine as my dads a fully coded welder! but its the silly things like major engine bay reshaping and stuff that im worried about! hope you get my drift, if you dont, you will when its done!!!!

and just to add me some extra sugar to the mix, could anyone let me know roughly what sort of performance i could be looking at? i dont know what the 535 engine chucks out as standard so got nothing to go on as yet. i know boost is going to play a big part too, but i want a car i can drive without it detonating on me!!!! so things wont be at the extremes!

also, finally lol, any suggestions as to what turbo, injectors, management etc have been found to work best with these types of projects

a major load to ask for i know, but its all research and yor help and guidence will go a long way and when its done, your all welcome to come have a go!!!!

even fitting the 3.5 without a turbo is a damn good laugh and relatively easy. it's in the region of 210 - 220 bhp as standard. not to be sniffed at!

I'm sure I recall a turbo conversionon the E34 535i by someone like Janspeed. It may even have been a twin turbo setup. I know it was good for over 300bhp too

guys thanks so much for the links, i have gone all square eyed lookin through them all! the budget is soundin really affordable spread over the next year or so, sorry its going to be a long time coming, but as all the links say, preperation and research are the keys to a simple job. happy its got some tails waggin too!

i cant wait to get started on this, thinkin of buyin a banger 535 with a nice engine, gettin it all set up and fitted to that, then takin the whole engine out, havin it all re worked, strengthened up and all that then droppin it into mine! figure its a good way to make sure it works before i destroy mine totally!

sounds like what me and dips built about 2 years ago, just doing a rebuild now for 400-500hp and monster torque!!

ooo you guys!!!! lol, its all so excitin, but i am finding a bit of a rift between people suggesting sticking with the 2.5 and addin the turbo and others preferring the 3.5,

simple solution is which has more ponies but more importantly for me which is the better torque? i would guess at the 3.5, hence my initial idea, but by how much more are you improving you figures from the 2.5 by jumping up anoter litre? if its going to be negligible then i might just stick with the 2.5, however it would be nice to badge it up as the 335!

3.5 is going to give you a lot more to work with but its an engine swap ontop of the turbo work. Your call

Probably more power I'd say. I would have thought that a bolt on 2.5 turbo conversion is only going to be good for 240-250bhp max without potential reliability issues or internal mods. I'd expect a 3.5 to be at least 30bhp up on this, with better reliability.

I guess it depends on the state of the engine in the first place...

yeah, this is sounding like my thinking is on the right lines, i am currently about 70/30 towards the 3.5, cause the badge will look rather special!

but the 2.5 doesnt require a new engine transplant and cost of, hmm, gotta be careful here, talkin myself out of it! lol,

You want an E34 535 (M30) or E32 735 manual to make things simpler
