i have heard that the vanos doesn't work well on a E30
because the speed info isn't compatible with the S50B30 ECU
so we must make a speed info signal converter.
someone knows, how to make this converter ?
thank you

The speed signal input of the original BMW E36 M3 and E34 M5 ECU comes from the original DASH unit, that has converted the speed signal coming from the rear axle sensor.
If we left the original DASH unit out, the ECU misses the speed signal and goes in SECURITY
APPLICATIONS
For racing we prefer another DASH unit
When we have transplanted a E36 M3 3.0 / 3.2 or E34 M5 3.6 / 3.8 engine in another BMW body
We have the solutions :
SPEED SIGNAL ADAPTOR WITH ORIGINAL REAR AXLE SENSOR
order # E0142-BM-09014101 price 150,00 € ex VAT
to be used on the E30 models using E30 speed sensor of rear axle with M3 E36 and M5 E34 engine without the need to use E36 or E34 speedometer, keeping E30 speedometer in function .
also can be used on all E36 models without the use of original Tacho instrument cluster (for example race application)
for all S50B30 - S52B32 - S38B36 - S38B38 engines/ECU's
also other engine transplants in E30 (see list below)
possibility to use this unit without original speedometer, but with rear axle sensor. THIS HAS TO BE SPECIFIED WHEN ORDERED

The raw speed signal from the diff is not the correct signal. This signal is fed into the instrument cluster electronics and processed into a signal that is compatible with the S50 ECU.bmw13fr wrote:some people said that the speed signal which comes from E30 rear diff isn't compatible with the S50B30 ECU.
so in France, some guys run with an E36 dashboard (or with Kempower unit) in their car
It even speed limits at around 155 mph

I thought early cars also had a C101 connector, but it has less running through it (road speed being one that's not present).Brianmoooore wrote:C101 connector is the big round plug and socket on the engine bulkhead just inboard of the fusebox, and is on all facelift E30s. Speed signal is on pin 14 (black/white wire) .
Mine is a 91bmw13fr wrote:ian => which years is your E30 ?

Yes, that didn't come out quite as I meant it. I mean with all the signals present to interface directly with the S50/M50 engine looms.ian332isport wrote: I thought early cars also had a C101 connector, but it has less running through it (road speed being one that's not present).
Ian.

On early cars, it's present on the back of the instruments, but not at the C101. On later cars it's present on the back of the instruments and the C101.bmw13fr wrote:sorry, i wanted to speak about speed signal connector instead of C101 connector !
on some cars, it isn't present.
but on '91 E30, it is present !
so i think, if this connector (speed signal) isn't present you must buy an unit (as kempower sell)
if not the engine will run in default mode (240hp instead of 286hp)
somebody has already swap on an old E30 ?
thxxx ;)
i have taken the speed signal from the cluster to the obc....br/rd wire, will it be fine if i just connect it directly to the dme pin 42?ian332isport wrote:As Gunni said above, just use the speed signal from the E30 instrument cluster and it will work fine. This signal is already running through the C101 connector on facelift cars.
You must have the speed signal connected, or the ECU will introduce a secondary rev limiter at 7K RPM which effectively limits the speed. It has nothing to do with the Vanos though.
