project cheapskate

I'm new here, and new to e30's. I've always liked them but never owned one until now. Just got myself this little bargain as a runabout.

Its a bmw e30 tourer, manual, bit tatty inside, 178k on the clock but full service history, owned by one of plods finest so well driven and nothing suspect about it.

The awesome lack of power from the smooth tappety noisy 316 engine, the smooth refined boingy and standard suspension, top spec blaupunkt stereo that doesnt work and clean tidy interior if you ignore the dog smell, torn seat and a few electric bits that dont work all add up to a right bargain!

I dont really have many plans for it since its just a runabout for now but if the mood takes me, tinted lenses all round, light smoke window tints, m-tech sport kit, light brows, spray the grill body colour, fog lights and a new interior would probably be on the cards.

If I keep it long term, 325 engine swap, slam it, m3 kit including wide arches, shaved handles; badges etc....but tbh none of that is likely to happen.

This is when I got it 4 days ago.

It cost me £240, with 5 months tax and a full tank so in reality, it was 120 ish.

This is it now.

The custom springs were obtained from some poor chap who thought they were too low when he had them made so sold them to me very cheaply, I believe they are a 100mm drop.

The white one belongs to 328touring from this forum who bought my boot tray thingy. I want his kit!

And this is a photoshop of what it will look like when I tint the lights later this week, though I'm not entirely sure I want to do this yet, any opinions will be valued and possibly ignored.

Image
Image

My main aim with this project is to do it cheap, and I mean cheap as in, a fat ugly crackwhore late on a sunday night cheap. Donations and charity are widely and enthusiastically accepted. So far I have recieved a free mtech front bumper which needs some spraying, anything you happen to have gathering dust or taking up space that I could use, send my way!

hope you like it, feel free to be jealous of how clean an example it is considering the price, and criticise away. I take criticism well, with only a mild chance of abuse and un-founded threats of violence as a possible recourse.

edit> Just read the rules..I'm not very good with rules but will try to comply.

Engine - 101BHP of high mileage 316 power!
Suspension - dodgy custom springs, a guess at 100mm drop.
Brakes - standard, surprised that it has discs all round.
Wheels & Tyres - Konig Driven; 17" with 3 toyo t1-s tyres and a t1-r.
Exterior - diamantschwartz with two carpark dings and a scratch.
Interior - battered, 178k of abuse shows on the gearknob and drivers seat.
ICE - factory blaupunkt stereo that wont work until I get a code.
Security - errrrr, I can lock it from the passenger side and boot....
Performance - not much.
Future Plans - as above.

cheers chap. :o: Though I credit the effortless and timeless good looks of the e30 for this, rather than my cheap-ass 'stick some wheels on and deck it' effort.

A second blacked out tourer - but does it go over speed humps with that drop??

i think those wheels need spacers to make them more prominent, there just slightly tucked away. well its better than before, if the shell is good i'd do an engine swap if you are keeping it long term.

well. Its not insured until thursday so havent taken it out on the mean and very humped streets of plympouth yet, but it gets over the one in my road ok, just about. There's about an inch clearance between the sump and road 8O

Its more of a cruiser/family car at the momoent anyway so i'm not that worried.

Bryn. I reckon I will take that seat off you as soon as I'm out and about in it i'll give you a call. :D

Gouki - i agree, I was thinking that myself, should be popping down to my friendly local car parts shop (who's website i built for free and get a very nice discount from) to pick some up when they come into stock next week.

Cheers for the comments folks, I will keep you posted on the progress.

Or keep the badge and stick an M30/M50/M52 etc in it

Lovely tourer mate and a complete bargain, it's amazing the difference sorting wheels and suspension makes.

Mate thats a cool tourer you have there and a bargain at that. It looks to be in better condition than my 318i which I have spent loads on and is now a 325i but bodywork wise, yours seems a lot better!

Smoke all the lights, get rid of 316 badge and get a black kidney grille (all very cheap to do) and you will have one mean looking bargain car.

cheers folks. I'm very happy with it, all I wanted was a cheap runabout but saw this up for sale in the under £500 ads and had to have it. I'll be sure to keep you posted on the progress.

Plans for it sound good too, basically anything free and youll fit it!

Cant remember 328tourings name? but met him a few months ago to buy a bonnet off me,nice guy and his tourer is sweet with a great spec for what he paid.
Say hi from me when you see him!

Hopefully catch up with you one day at one of the many SouthWest meets that get organised on here?

Good luck with the car, looks like your having fun with it

hehe you've got it right there, free is gooood.

I am spending a bit, £40 ish for a couple of cans of halfrauds paint tomoro to do the grill and the bumper I have, some lense tint for the lights and a couple of rolls of window tint which a mate is fitting (as chav as that sounds, he is really good and it wont be a bodged job, no bubbles.).

Will post up some progress pics as and when.

Oh and I'll be sure to show my face at a meet or two. Been having a look through the meets section and it seems pretty active down here which makes a refreshing change.

oh and I was donated a 325 engine, prop and diff yesterday, its got a suspected blown head gasket though (smokes, overheats), and 177k on it so not sure when/if it will go in.

I love that Black on Black rims "Rat" look - i'll post up a couple of pics on here tomorrow of my 320 auto Breg in Diamond Black + Black Momo's lol

Same as you though - i believe in the word "Cheap" when it comes to a motor you don't hold to much respect for - some times they end up looking kind of cool?

Neil.

Commited - The pics were taken by a friend of mine who's a bit of an amateur photo buff. He's also my mechanic and works for tea and cigarettes 8)

He'll be fitting the engine this week if I can kick his lazy ass into gear soon.

Mate, get the lights tinted get some smoked hellas for the front get rid of the 316i badge and get a de-chromed grill winkeye It will look evil as fcuk then

Re:

by munky30
the grill's being sprayed asap, body colour. The lights will be tinted very slightly when I can be bothered (hella's dont sound free  )

the 316 badge will be modified to say 3i6 (I'll credit you with the intelligence to 'get' that) when i fit the 325 lump, but its staying , for comedy value....

Looks fuggin awesome! 10/10 for stance and wheels.

I have to say I am now considering a tourer as a contender, I was hooked on the idea of a coupe. But your estate just looks hard as nails.
