Hey guys,

Got an unexpected surprise when i got home from work today - My M3 was back in my garage :D

I was kinda confused because it was ment to be in sussex, so i gave the guy a call. He said he had no room in his lockup at the moment so it would have to stay here until september.

I couldnt help giving her a good clean and my mate took these vids, their not great but enjoy -

crappy powerflow exhaust clip -

parked up -

Looking and sounding good Ben, As always. So has it had any work done to it or will that be done in september now??

Nothing yet, it was just sitting around while my mechanic gets some other cars ready. Theres no rush for the work to be done, hes not charging me for any labour so its just a case of when he gets around to doing it (its off the road until next july)

Thanks for the compliments but i think the exhaust sounds pretty crap, if you listen closely you can hear a rattle. The whole system will be coming off and a miltek going back on.

The engine also makes a lot of noise but im told thats normal and theres not much i can do about it

Im really glad its back though, even if i cant drive it

IF i can get a good rate on short term insurance il bring it to ace next month

Cheers mate,

I dont know of any decent cabbys around for sale at the moment but its worth trying all the usual places

Pistonheads
Autotrader
Ebay
BMW mags

For an M3 cab in good condition expect to pay 10k+

Good luck with the search :D

Definatly a big difference between this and my dads with the way it sounds. Get a supersprint system instead of miltek

Re:

by m3ben05
How different is it and in what way?

It used to have an original miltek but it was badly fitted and was too close to the ground. I was really impressed by the exhaust tho, i liked the sound it made.

My dads sounds throatyer due to more air coming in the engine. because if no AFM. And it will sound even better with c/f airbox on :D

I ment to ask him to fire it up at ace, does it still tick?

I love the sound of the carbon airbox's, you shoud hear a group A engine warming up - they sound amazing!

No the engine sounds great no ticks rattles even when cold. You just wait till he can hit the rev limiter. The video camera will have to come out. don't suppose your going to gaydon are you?

hmmm, iv been told all s14s are quite noisy. Certainly all the ones iv ever heard sound the same as mine.

Most likely il be at gaydon, depends on uni work tho i guess!

Most are tappety when cold. Alot of them do sound the same but when you got c/f airbox

Any idea what causes them to be so noisy? Mine does quiet down when it gets warm but its still pretty loud!

Aint got a clue. I'm sure someone know why there sounds loud. Oh well they all sound sweet at 7000rpm winkeye

Re:

by m3ben05
indeed they do, its really jut at idle they sound a bit rough.

Its weird tho because it sounded exactly the same after we had the engine rebuild 2 years ago.

My dads idles at 2000rpm sometimes lol or has no tickover what so ever.

My dads doesn't sound anything like it did before we had the engine rebuilt. But he has had alot of upgraded parts

True, im fairly confident that the engine is ment to sound the way it does. The guy who looks after it was the head mechanic at munich legends and his knowlage of these engines is undisputed.

Il ask him to havfe another look when i get the car back down there in september

AFAIK theres a few reasons.

i) Oil type. I know not what you run with but mine sounds a lot healthier after I've changed the oil (3K) Currently using Motul 300V 10W40 from Opie. When it ran GTX (also 10W40) it sounded worse. Alternatively Rags used to run 5/40 Mobil1 and swore by it.

2) Followers/Shims. As you know they run solid lifters which are better at high RPM than hydraulic equivilents. Though to be honest unless you are going above 7500-8 I daresay (guess!) that they arent needed really on a road car and as such are really for homologation purposes. Anyhow, try closing the shim clearences to their minimum and see if that helps.

3) Chain noise. Cam Chains are notoriously noisy in operation. Again, I cant say how many miles yours has done but you may find the guides are getting worn and the chains moving a little creating extra noise.

4) Exhaust Manifold. Lots of people can get caught out with a slight manifold leak, which can sound like the ticking sound of the valve gear. Of course as the manifold gets hotter cracks/leaks can either expand and seal or expand and leak. So its not always obvious.

But ultimately the S14 is a race derived engine and strangely I dont think quiet operation was very high on the list of specs BMW wanted

Great advice rich - thanks a lot!

Its running mobil 1 5/40 and its changed every 3k.

It had an engine rebuild 18k ago and the tappets have been adjusted 3 times since then.

The guy who does all my work used to be head mechanic at munich legends and he says its ment to sound the way it does, as does Nigel mosely so im not too worried about it, i just wish it made a bit less noise!

Have you considered sealing the engine bay with the "Evo" bonnet seals? (no 17 I think) >>Link<<

Or perhaps a larger undertray arangement. Think this is it >>>Link<<<
