Hi everyone
Thought I would share my latest purchase with you. Picked this 1992 316i up at the weekend, needs a bit of work for an mot, should keep me busy for a while!

Hi and welcome!
Looks clean, what is needed for the MOT?
Thanks

It needs a back box, some brake lines, rear subframe bushes, track rod end and a bottom ball joint, it also failed on emissions which I'm hoping is down to the back box, although I think I might put a complete system on including cat. The clutch release bearing is also noisy but I can live with that for a while. The bodywork needs a general tidy up.
The bonnet cable has snapped so at the moment I'm using a screwdriver to open it! I think it also needs a couple of tyres and the I noticed the windscreen washer pipe has split too.
Enough to keep me busy for a while!

Bled the brakes this evening and all seems good, no leaks from all my homemade lines and rebuilt calipers! I'll check again in the morning,

Fitted the new exhaust yesterday but it seems really tight, the tailpipe is touching the rear valance. Maybe it's the cheap pattern backbox I bought!
Today I was going to start it to reverse it into my garage to start on the front end and it would seem the fuel pump has packed, I get 12V at the pump when I crank it but the pump is dead. New one ordered

.

New fuel pump sorted the starting problem.
I've now started on the front end, ordered some strut inserts from an online retailer that were supposed to be 51mm but they're 45mm! Very annoying!

Just finished rebuilding the front calipers, little bit of paint touching up before they go on the car

Failed it's MOT today!
Emissions too high
Fuel tank leak around filler pipe-hopefully just needs cleaned up.
Headlight alignment
Brake line under the bulkhead-missed that one
I've attached the emissions sheet if anyone has any ideas, I suspect the cat is done for but will get some injector cleaner and get it nice and hot for the retest

Sadly makes no difference to the emissions it needs to gain a pass.

Check the manufacture date. It might not need to pass the emissions if it was late registered.
Or put an older engine in. 325i would be good.

It has a build date of 27/04/1992. It has a CAT fitted.

I think the cut off was August 92.
Yours should need to be tested to the pre 1 August 1992 standard.

If it won't pass emissions, then it is telling you the car ain't running right. Go through all the things it could be, plugs, mixture , vacuum leaks etc. Get it running right and the emissions will fall in line.
Sometimes a good 'Italian tune' is all it needs to clear things out but obviously it needs to be on the road first to do that.
