If you know me or have ever spoken to me before you will know how much i wanted an E30 M3 but after chasing them for a while, for one reason or another it seemed like it just wasn't going to happen, i have owned a few sports in the last 2 years and always wanted one to keep but with the dream of an M3 i kept selling them, but i can confidently say that this car isnt going anywhere! Just want to say thank you to anyone who helped me or gave me advice, as i will probably be asking you for a lot more advice in the next year or twoa˜‰

. A few weeks ago (after thinking id never get one) i bought myself an E30 M3 of my own.

Its a bit of a project and i bought it as a non runner, it needs a few bits of rust sorting, paint work and just a really good going through and all the perishable parts replaced etc, but the way i looked at it, it had 3 previous owners, it is still LHD, it is HPI clear and i could break it for parts for more than what i paid for it.

The car is originally a German car made in 1987 imported into the UK in 1999 by a company called Ajec racing. From what i have been told they carried out the conversion on the car taking the S14 out and fitting a S38B38 from an E34 M5, the gearbox was also replaced with the 6 speed from the E34 and some uprated camshafts and crankshaft, from what i have been told the car was running 370bhp although there is no proof of this.

The car was then sold onto the previous owner in Redditch, who drove it for a year and then for some reason parked it up in 2001 and it hasn't been on the road since!

A friend of mine found out about the car and bought it late last year, from the man who had it parked up for 16 years, and stored it with the intention of restoring it but due to purchasing another classic car, he told me he was selling this so i purchased it from him.

So the plans for the car:

- First of all i need to get it running, the car turns over freely and has fuel but no spark, 2 different ECU's have been tried but to no avail, it has had new coils and plugs, so not to sure what it could be. I am thinking to keep the S38 in there as as much as i would like to have a nice original S14 M3, the cost of sourcing the engine, box and ancillaries and fitting it all would probably cost as much as i paid for the whole car. And who would want to go from 370bhp back to 195bhp lets be serious a˜‰

- It has full black heated leather which will need the rear bench sorting as it has a small tear.

- The bumpers have been smoothed over (very 90's) so will need to either have the filler taken out, or failing that new bumpers

- Bodywork is needed to passenger rear quarter, rear panel, and under fuse box and sills

They are the most pressing things that need sorting, obviously other things will be done like wheels, headlights, splitters, interior bits etc etc

Sorry about the lack of pictures, i haven't really had a chance to take many but i will update this when i can, thank you for reading a˜Š

Sam

Interesting looking project. 8) First thing to check would be crankshaft position sensor is working as it should, also check all ignition associated wiring and earths.

When you say it "has fuel", do you mean the spark plugs get wet when you crank the engine over?

Thanks mate, all ignition wiring is there as are earths and no breaks in the wiring, and by it has fuel, i mean that the fuel pump is working and its getting fuel to the injector rail, but no spark :( , how would i check that the crank sensor is working?

Usually, they are a simple coil of wire within a small cylindrical housing situated around the crankshaft toothed wheel at the front of the engine - disconnect it and measure the resistance with a multimeter, which should be in the order of around 500-1,500 ohms.

Your engine may also have a camshaft sensor(s), which are measured in a similar way.

I would also check the engine-to-body earth strap is in good condition and clean, or maybe run a second one between engine block and body of car/negative of battery terminal.

good project mate, glad you have finally got one! my sport had the same issue your having ( NO SPARK ) - turned out to be the wiring loom, but it's a good shout to check the crank sensor first

Congrats.. lots of work to be done... while the s38 is a great engine it's a shame you don't have the s14 in there...

Enjoy the dream!

Well done Sam !! You do very much deserve to get your hands on an E30 M3 !

Lachs Silver is my favourite colour on these by far !

Glad to hear you are progressing well on this. I am sure you'll be up and running soon.

Although not an S14 the S38B38 is awesome and keeps the ///M family connection strongly in place and is kind of sexy to be honest !

Remind me not to drag you in my M3 :)

for sale then?,
speaking form bitter experience you will regret selling her
the chances of getting another will become increasingly difficult unless your numbers come up
think long and hard if you don't really need the cash
