Ive fitted a Merceded e300 24v 3.0 turbo diesel mated to a 6 speed Mercedes gearbox

Image

With help of some great friends over at Sump-scuffers we custom made a 6 point rollcage

Who needs gussets when your cage fits properly

Image

Also running a Wilwood pedal box, ready for future upgrades

Image

Current spec
Up front
E46 lower arms
shortened e30 struts with mk1 golf inserts and weld on coilovers
E36 m3evo steering rack with 4mm lock spacers

E36 double wing diff cover with custom mounts
Suframe and diff mounts are solid steel and aluminium respectily which also lift the subframe removing the need for adjustment tabs

Hybrid Mercedes/ Bmw propshaft
Custom engine and gearbox mounts for the usual engine swop

The merceds lump because its a million miles better than any Bmw diesel out there, sorry if that hurts you but its the truth
Its multivavle chain driven / easily converted to full manual injection pump
Stupidly reliable / currently returning 45mpg with my rather heavy foot
Is good for 500hp and 800nm with just lots of boost and fuel / revs over 6k rpm
6 speed gearbox and clutch kit bolt straight together all stock merc parts
And they are stupidly cheap this engine actally made me money after breaking the donor car
There not even that heavy around 245kg for a dressed engine
So why woudnt you haha

Well thats what im getting full tank to full tank, speedo is spot on as well
Remeber its only pulling 1400kg of bmw with a manual instead of 1800kg with a auto

Im also running a smaller injection pump thats running less fuel which will be saving the mpgs as well

They both run standard e30 hubs, I made adapters to take that out to 6x139.7 as theres lots of cheap awesome looking wheels out there for jap trucks, the set above cost £42

This looks interesting - would like to know what gearbox and clutch/flywheel you used and if you have it running on the standard ecu and drive by wire setup?

The BMW 3.0litre dervs are the best on the market and most powerful, reliability has never been a issue except for the swirl flap issue which can be resolved with delete kit. I can only imagine that the wiring isn't as complex as the Bmw dervs, after having mine wired I can say it's not a task for the faint hearted.

The actual M57 diesel is very good - it's what's bolted to it that causes issues. The Merc 300D engine is a very good one and capable of 500'000 miles - ask any taxi driver.

The engine is out a 1998 e300 and is turbocharged stock power is 198hp and 350nm, im currently running the stock tiny turbo which is mounted very low down, ive fitted a older om603 injection pump which is fully manual one lever to go and one lever to turn it off, unfortantly it doesnt put out as much fuel reducing power to around the 160hp mark im told,
there is a total of 3 wires to start the engine, one for glowplugs and 2 for the startermotor nothing to keep it running, clearly ive immobilised it by other means

I am a mechanic/ auto electrician and repair wiring/electrical faults on a daily basis and anything with a ecu is trouble, i see far to many problems due to wiring ecus faults
Another reason for building this, aswell my truck is also a mechanical diesel, i think im subconsciously a dooms day prepper

Ive currently got a c220cdi 6 speed gearbox fitted and a merc sprinter solid mass conversion flywheel kit

Im told over on STD forum that the gearbox is good for 400hp behind a 606
The clutch certaintly wont, as its currently on the limit it begins to smell when beating on it

I'm in on this, I like the leftfield approach to this build, I like the knuckle duster welded into the cage and I especially like the fact that if nuclear armageddon comes you'll have the only working E30 in the country, presuming the fireballs and shock waves don't get it first. The Merc lump, the cage, it's just so wrong it's right.

i have to say i prefer merc derv engines to bmw derv engines!
talking from experience of running both brands in the family the mercs engines are quieter rev much more freely and feel much gruntier even at lower revs (e320cdi vs 530d)
we have been running mercs and bmw derv engined vehicles side by side since early 90s even back then although the merc engine prob wasnt as powerful but it was much more reliable! (im talking 12v 300d engine here)
