My 320i..

I've never really updated from previous threads what I've done with my 320i auto, so thought I'd start from scratch. This isn't really going to show much in the way of work going on, just snippets of the journey. Hope you enjoy the read..

So I always wanted an E30 but was never in a position to own one due to long commutes being expected from my cars due to work. Wasnt uncommon for me to do 40k a year in my cars, so getting a 25 year old motor wasn't an option, unless I wanted to run it in to the ground after 6 months.

However due to a change of job and circumstances, after all of these years I finally had the chance to get one and use it as my daily runner that would want for nothing.

Fortunately I came across an ebay ad from an old zoner that had a done a part resto on a 1990 320i in diamond schwartz. He brought it from an old doctor who had owned the car since pretty much new, and had become too old to drive. He had only put 5000 miles on the car since 2008 yet had always took it to BMW's in Banstead and got oil changes, cambelts, you name it! Even when he hadn't driven it! The service booklet is literally full to the stage where i only had one space for an inspection II that was due when I acquired it.

The doctor eventually got too old to drive in 2012 and the previous owner brought it off his daughter with the intention of fragging it.

For some reason he decided against it, and instead replaced inner and outer arches, done all the welding required at the time, and then gave it a full respray. He changed the interior for full leather although left a two tone dash.

I traveled across London to my old stomping ground of Isle of Dogs to meet my future love (the car). The exterior looked brilliant, however the interior didn't fair so well. A few of the electrics didn't work, the handbrake was loose, the brake pedal felt very spongy. The underdash panel was hanging off, roof lining was filthy. Battery was finished... the list went on. There was also a very dodgy stereo set up that looked like it would short circuit all the electrics at any stage. Shame I didn't take any snaps of the interior when I got the car, mostly through embarrassment I suspect. It was literally like two different cars, the outside looking brand new and looked after, the inside looking like a 25 year pile of s**t.

Image

Any how after taking delivery of the car that evening, I got a new battery, and run it to work for a few days to size up what was wrong. I had a list of bits needing changing, and took the car to B&W's up in Hayes to get the car looked over. This was the make or break as to whether I'd brought a patched up banger or was on to something good.

First thing that stood out to him was the rear subfame bushes had gone and the subframe plates were missing entirely, instead replaced by someone plying it with some sort of black sealant to cover it up 8O How this got through it's last MOT I have no idea. From looking at it on the ramp, it could of collapsed at any stage. Anyhow that was done, along with a load of the electrics being sorted and a check over revealed it was clean and free from rot :D

I ran the car for another month before taking it to BMW Chiswick for it's inspection 2. I'm used to taking cars for services and getting a list as long as my arm of things that need fixing, so I was prepared for the worst. It came back from the service and I'll be damned they didn't have a complaint to make, came through the service with no advisories 8O

I then set about tidying the interior and although it came up pretty sweet, the cream two tone interior wasnt my cup of tea. I also found the leather wasnt upto standard either.

Image

Image

So I decided to tear it all out! It went from this..

Image

to this...

Image

The new Jap stereo came out in favour of an original BMW stereo. Plan is to connect the Sony through the glovebox and leave the tape head unit in the dash just not hooked up to anything. I will need to get everything rewired though, which will come at a later stage.

I then got some fresh sports seats from a member off the zone, just need the door cards next! (give me a shout if you have any spare)

Then came the interiors finishing touches

Image

Including a set of OEM mats from Z3I, nice bloke. They needed a slight scrub, but came up a treat

Image

I still want a new steering wheel, probably just an SE one to keep it original, although good looking ones do seem to be extremely rare. Also need a new auto gear lever. I will get there when I come to terms with handing over the 150 odd quid that they cost. But other than that, I think the interiors where i want it to be now.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Mechanically! I recently replaced all the brakes, discs, pads, cylinders, shoes and drums.

Image

I've tried to keep the car as standard and as true to the original Bavarian engineering it was born in to. I've always tried to use original new BMW parts where needed, and only gone with good quality aftermarkets when it's been absolutely necessary, i.e. Bilsteins for the shocks, or temporary service parts like brake discs. Any work on the engine bay has always been and will always be done with original parts... no matter how brassic it leaves me :o: Fortunately a very good friend of mine is a mechanic at Berry Chiswick so he's also taken a personal interest in it.

I've still a list of things I need to replace, and if I had a money tree I'd do it all now, buttttt I don't. So I'll replace and update this thread as i go along. My next update will be a lot more to do with the engine! Keep tuned!

Keep up the good work, looks great

Thanks all, appreciate it. I'm one of those annoying OEM freaks, nothing grinds my gears more than going Hounslow and seeing old turds with halfords alloys and aftermarket spoilers. Not that I go hounslow much.

Thanks Jim, if it's the leather variant and not the plastic one I've got money waiting for you

A bit of a juicier update engine wise since the last post..

Two issues that arose.. firstly overheating in traffic became an issue, obviously the viscous fan coupling. Remedied with a new Hella coupling and after 3-4 weeks of seeing the needle creep over the mid point, it feels great to sit on Hammersmith road for an hour without moving and not have to worry about my engine and head gasket blowing out.

Image

After this I had a CPS issue, resulting in my first breakdown in the old boy. Not a proud moment, as in the past whenever I’ve been slated for driving a 25 year old car, I could always say ”˜Well I’ve never broken down’.. not anymore though. :(

Water pump pulley chewed right through the wire

Image

Anyway down to what I’ve been preparing for, for the past few months, and hopefully the last major work I’ll have to do for a while.

The timing belt was done less than 5000 miles ago, although that was back in ’08 so thought it time for a change! I don’t often listen to BMW’s marketing ploys, but this seemed like a good shout.

Image

Whilst I was at it, I wanted to nail a load of things that hadn’t been done in a long time, hopefully these might also cure my intermittent lumpy idle while we’re at it.

Obviously all the belts were coming out, as well as a new waterpump going in

Image

Image

All the fluids were going to also be changed.. again! As previously stated I did have a inspection 2 done Dec/Jan, but I've since seen that the valve clearances hadn't been touched nor the rocker cover changed, it opened the question as to what else couldn't they be bothered to do. Seeing as a bottle of gearbox oil is around a tenner, it makes sense to just do it anyway just to be sure! Also ended up keeping the Gulf racing oil.. further research showed that the only harm it can do is to a catalytic converter.. which my car doesn't have... Plus the benefits of an ester based oil seemed to steal the deal!

Image

Then there was some ignition parts.. Stayed away from the GSF/ECP lot with this. Beru may well be a great OEM brand, but further research online showed their weak spots tend to be dizzy caps. Didn't make sense to go for BMW, partly because their caps were over a £100, their arms were cropping up to £40 and their HT leads were £300! .. so went for Bosch, a middle ground price between the dirt cheap ECP, and the overly expensive dealer.. beside it's what they were probably going to send me anyway, minus the BMW badge.!

Image

Next was a few water hoses that I've had to cut back in the past, and a new breather hose.

Image

Then was engine and gearbox mounts, and all the accompanying washers and screws needed... plus filters and other odds and sods.

Image

Next was to actually fit it all.. Here's a snap of us in action.. winkeye

Image

Just kidding it's all being done tomorrow, I'll update with how it goes! :)

Car looks awesome mate, Iv just done a load of work on mine and can't believe some of the part prices.
You also have the wheels that I'm now after, that's the only change I want to do on mine, 15" BBS. winkeye

Thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback! :)

Well changing those belts is one hell of an arse ache! We spent the whole day near enough doing this. The engine bay never looked so empty! Good job we did though because the timing belt and the waterpump looked like they were literally on their last legs!

The distributor cap and rotor arm were also old and worn, and from driving home, the difference in power from the ignition parts was easily noticeable! Always felt like it was getting held back by something before, and now I know what.

Didn't get time to do the mounts, everything else took up all the time. Unfortunately the rough idle remains, all that's left to do to resolve that is an injector refurb. Just really inconvenient to have the car off the road for a week to get them done.

Other than that the cars never felt better 8)

have you checked and checked again for vacuum leaks, do a full boundary test. EVERY time i have had a rough idle it is due to vacuum leaks, most from pinched gaskets or loose clips/nuts/pipes etc..

Love the car, one of my favorite on here at the moment.

Thanks Jim.. When you say a full boundary test, what exactly is involved. You mean check all the main air connections/pipes with brake cleaner or something?

beautiful 320i in Diamond black there! youve done all the jobs in one go ive been doing over a year!! my missus's cars a similar spec - sold new at Park lane in London. i just chopped the bottletops for 15" BBS and enjoyed the smooth 2.0 auto. changing gears if you live in a busy city is overated! heres my missus's wheels, nearly a dead ringer!>>>

Thanks mate.. mine's Diamandschwarz Metallic.. bit of an optical illusion, sometimes you'll swear blind it's black, in other lights it looks grey. I would of preferred straight black, but kept it original.

Yeah wanted to get all the stuff done in one go rather than being back and forth with things and having to fork out constantly. Better to take the hit in one go and then get some enjoyment for a while. Still a way to go though. Tackling all the bushes next.. but that can wait till 2015 now! :)
ultimatime30 wrote:Where did you get the auto gaiter brush thingy from mate?
I got mine from the dealers was only around £20ish if I remember correctly. To be honest unless yours is really bad, I wouldn't bother. Within a week of having the new one on, you soon get the new brush thistles lodged apart like the old one, from where the lever's left in park mode. I only wish the strands would of stayed as fresh as when I brought them :(

Which dealer did you get it from, I only use the car from April to Septemeberish so would hopefully last a bit longer!

got a really nice second hand auto box brush from a breaker. i wonder if the new OE part you can get from BMW parts is to the same spec. with all the material and manufacturing restrictions that ther are in place the original hard wearing polymer or nylon may not be a like for like replacement with any made more recently. mine is probably 30 years old and is in mint nick with hardly any gap oppersite park. ive bought a couple of OE bits from Sytners recently that havent been "quite" as good. maybe some of the original parts suppliers are simply long gone.

Brief update of superficial things..

Due to inadequate parking at work, and some clumsy staff of mine, I got some damage to my bodywork.. Specifically the bonnet, DS front wing, and PS rear wing. After a tantrum or two, my MD agreed to foot the bill.

It took a while, but i now have fresh paint..

Image

Image

Image

Other than that since the last update.. I met up with Jim who supplied me with a matching set of door cards for my interior

Image

Also finally after months of ummm'ing and ahhh'ing.. I finally have a Tech 1 steering wheel 8)

Image

I also had problems with rattling center caps.. so after a while of driving around without any, I got a set from the Zone's very own Phil. Then a couple of genuine adhesive badges later, pretty much have a new set.

Image

Also for the total paedos on this forum I got some genuine valve caps from the dealer.. pretty pointless but for a few pence each, why not! winkeye

Image

Had an incident yesterday morning at the petrol station, where my car wouldn't turn over! My TPS has been playing up for a while, I'm thinking it's just given up the ghost. Was in the midst of collecting parts to revamp the air flow system , including rubber boot, air pipes, caps etc. .. looks like I'm going to have to bring that forward now.

I'll cover that in my next update!

Lovely BMW !
Great to see previous owners have had it lovingly looked after by BMW Dealers
Nice to see you had BMW Inspection II Service at BMW Dealer too :-)
Nice to see lots of New Genuine BMW Parts too.
Maybe just needs LSD ?

Thanks Soni. Yeah he's had a charmed life. Spoilt rotten if you ask me.

Not much point in a LSD though I reckon, as I rarely put my foot down and even if I did it's still a slow car.. so won't be doing donuts and speeding round corners with 2 wheels in the air, like you Sport mob!
