335i touring now taxed and on the road [06-04-2014]

Bought the touring just over 6 months ago now and thought ide start a thread as im going to be converting it to an m30 very soon.

Its a 2.0 auto so its gutless but also manages to be worse on petrol than a lot of the jags and v8 bmws ive owned. The reason I got it though is the body is really mint

As I got the car
Image
Image

not long after getting it I got myself another touring for parts that was already converted to m30 but the bodywork is shite but drove well and has a lot of good bits on it which ill be swapping over.

Image
Image

so far ive swapped over all the suspension as the red one had bilstean shocks allround and lower springs, also bought new e46 m3 cabrio rear top mounts and z3m reinforcing plates, swapped the mint sport interior into the 320, also put the 15" bbs' on which are on khumos and painted black which I know most will approve of but they are only temporary wheels until after xmas

Ill be taking m30 out of the red one tomorrow to give it a mild clean up and reaplace the worn clutch release bearing ready to stick in the 320i.

ive never done an engine conversion before but ive got a headstart so shouldn't be too scary... :?

Hope it all goes well, the white one certainly looks clean and a great car for the swap, best of luck.

Good start here... :D Nice project..

I've just got the same top mounts (as I'm sure most) and Z3 plates to go in my touring soon.

Good luck with the engine swap.

jimbom that will be a massive favour! if theres anything off either of the tourings that you need, let me me know.

I only got a couple of hours in the garage today so didn't get as much as I wanted done but got exhaust and prop off the m30, yesterday I took bonnet off, engine loom, rad and all the hoses and disconnected fuel pipes, powersteering pipes etc..

took a load of photos yesterday from my phone but I sat on it earlier whilst under the car and smashed my screen :(

only ones I took today off my camera is of the exhaust as was by myself and in a hurry because it was getting dark

tomorrow ill be taking powersteering pump off, disconnect clutch slave cylinder pipe and gear linkages then drain engine oil. Then ill try to pull the beast out.

Picked the engine lift up from my girlfriends dads unit today and took a few photos of his cobra which has a brand new crate 4.6 quad cam mustang v8 with an equaly new manual box. The thing is an animal cant wait to have a go once its gone for its test. Also got a glimpse of the gt40 he built for a customer which has a fuel injected 7.0 crate motor with stacks and over 600bhp, ill get some pics of the gt40 when I take the engine lift back

Every white touring gets called a fridge :D It does indeed look like a tidy shell to start with.

The red touring looks very low on the front, can't be much fun with the weight of an M30 as well... Does look good though 8)

And that cobra needs side pipes

the beast is out!! :D :D :D

now need to take other little bits I need off the red one so I can get rid of the shell to make room for the white one.

Just need to collect a few bits like new clutch, slave cylinder and give it a service and a clean up and im ready to go

Super happy its out, was abit daunting as ive never done anything like it before but was a straight forward removal and don't think ill have a problem getting it into the 320i fingers crossed

wired up the electric fan this morning, put rad in and the pipes, just need to put coolant, power steering fluid in and bleed then fit prop and diff and im away :D.. also need to get a new throttle cable as the one i put in had a broken clip where it goes into the bulkhead and its making throttle stick open

It goes pretty well! It's a heavy old bus, also sporting a LPG kit but with Leda coilovers, an uprated LSD, heavily rose/poly jointed suspension and a 325i cab front ARB it's still no slouch through the twisty bits :)

More than able to hang onto a M52 powered E30 and a E30 M3 round scotland a few years back :) Out on real roads, there's very little between them.

its now on the road :D

theres a few bits to sort still buts its drivable been out in it all day and things i need to sort still are..

.two bigger exhaust mounts for the rear box as its the pipes are touching the body

.its idling at 1500 rpm i think its due to me needing a new rubber pipe between throttle body to afm so ill be ordering one from bmw

.need new discs pads for the rear and adjust handbrake

.i havent got a reverse light because i swapped it from an auto to manual so ill have to sort that

glad its back on the road pulls really well although i think the diffs a little bit high? its a 3.91 lsd 1st gears abit usless but really pulls in 2nd and 3rd

I've got a good pipe from AFM to TB if you want it, £15 inc postage, might be cheaper than BM???

Well done for getting her on the road, bet you are loving 3rd gear

I think the 3.46 is perfect for an everyday M30 but you may want a 3.64 if you enjoy the lanes more than the motorway

respect to you !!!

Re:

by shanehaward
thanks jim. i will have that pipe off you if you want to sell it.

might think about getting a 3.64 in the future.

had a little play with a bmw 1m this morning on a duel carragway which i really didnt want to do because i only just got it on the road but i couldnt stop myself. He obviously was faster but he didnt leave me, he was pulling away slowly though which supprised us both i think espesially as ive left the 320i badge on the back winkeye

need to get some longer exhaust mounts for the rear box also.

ill probably give speedtouch a pm about getting a chip off of him next weekend, has anybody on here had an m30 chip off him? what sort of difference should i expect from performance?
