INTRODUCTION November 2011

Hi folks, I'm slowly getting this car in good order mechanically and aesthetically, returning and keeping it as close to OEM as reasonably possible. Maybe a few modifications but nothing that can't be returned to OEM. Once I have finished emptying my wallet achieving this I can start to save for the full strip down, respray and rebuild.

Been a member on here for years as I used to have a 325i Sport. I went down the 5 series route as a family man and had numerous E34's, a couple of E39's and a fantastic E38.

So I have bought this 1987 325i cabrio.

It is diamond black with aftermarket Alpina wheels and a genuine M-tech II bodykit. Also has recaro bubble interior. I believe it has been owned by a couple of members on here and no offence to those owners but it is high time it was spruced up to make it what it should be.

It has many areas needing attention, mechanicaly it currently needs a new starter motor and fuel sender. The roof needs replaced as it is tatty and leaking. It requires a little welding in the drivers footwell. I am in the process of aquiring a Cardinal red sport interior. The indicators will be changed to clear ones as somone thought it fit to black out the front lenses and foglights! Not nice. it needs new bumper covers and a new aeriel. There are a few bits of the interior trim that i will be putting back to standard like the chrome handbrake handle, and light pull knob. There is loads if missing trim so I intend to find every little bit to make the car complete.

Bodywise it is very clean although it has obvioisly had some work, the passenger rear wing has ripples in the paint, and there are a few defects here and there that i will just need to live with for a few years until i eventually have a full restoration done with a complete respray. The wheels will need a refurb at some point as well although i will be on the lookout for a genuine set of Alpinas.

So here goes with some pics to start it off, A couple are from the original advert which make it look lovely but they hide a lot of required work and defects.

The 500 mile journey home was a challenge trying to limp home with a dodgy starter motor, unballanced wheels, fuel guage not working etc, but this is where it nearly all ended before i got started. This happened at 70mph on the motorway where i nearly hit the barrier and a couple of other cars. Thanks to a bit of experience and skill and a hell of a lot of luck I got it onto the hard shoulder. Unfortunately the previous owner had not left me with a spare wheel so had to call out the AA. Once at a really dodgy backstreet garage, the only one open on a friday evening i was on my way again.

A lesson to anyone thinking of buying cheap tyres. They were nearly new.

I've since had all the wheels reballanced and discovered the wheel spiggots were not the right size!! There was no balancers on the front wheels either.

So far the interior has been stripped out and ready to be taken away and swapped with the Cardinal red one and I have replaced the roof with a 2nd had one in better condition. Also had to realign the windows and fix the horseshoe release handle.

The saggy front valance has been sorted and the foglights restored to the proper clear lense with a bit of paint stripper!

Have found someone local with a breaker who is selling me the starter motor, fuel sender, handbrake handle, lightpull knob and spare wheel. All for £80

Also ordered 4 new m-tech bumper cover plates for £30 from the dealer and got some clear front and side indicators from e-bay.

Once i have the started motor fixed it will be taken to get the footwell welded.

Many more pics to come.

Any comments and suggestions welcome.

I saw this advertised - caught my eye as it looked very nice. Looking forward to your updates, mate. Sorry to read the incident on your return journey, could have been very nasty.

A question did you adjust the windows because they where "catching" on the roof or some other reason?
They were catching on the roof and slaping off each other!

Was that easy to do and did it involve removing the rear seats? This is a minor job I need to do myself.

There is a good 'how to' on the wiki page, very simple. I had to level them and stop them going up too far. I only needed to remove my rear bench and the doorcards.

UPDATE ON FIXES AND DE-MOLESTING March 2012

Hi folks, thought it was about time i posted an update on this project. I have done loads of bits and bobs but not many photos i'm affraid. Will take some more soon and show you all how it's going. Over the winter months i have just been buying replacement parts and fitting them. Have got rid of everything non standard except the exhaust. It has needed a bit of welding as you can see in the pics and now needs more at the back.

FIXED:
It now starts first time every time after finding a loose wire under the steering column :o: The horn now works and the windows all work and lined up properly. The indicators work at normal speed and all the speakers now wired up properly.

REPLACED:
I've replaced the bubble leather now with some nice cardinal red stuff. All repaired and redyed. Have replaced the roof with a second hand item, unfortunately have broken the rear window since!

Other items replaced inside are the centre consoles, door handle surrounds, rear roof release handle, horseshoe struts, handbrake handle, light pull knob, cigarette lighter and stereo and loom has been changed to a standard bmw one from an E34 and the broken electric aerial has been replaced with a manual telescopic one.

BOUGHT AND AWAITING FITTING:
New bonnet, bumper caps, clear indicator lenses and side repeaters

TO DO:
Rear inner arch welding, exhaust rehang, MOT, Full service, polish.

Here are some of the bad bits that needed done

WELDING REAR LOWER ARCHES
March 2012

I had the car jacked up last week while i was doing the rear brakes. I decided to have a poke around and inevitably this is what i have discovered. The work is getting done this afternoon so i'll be posting up pics of the progress. The sills seem really solid thankfully.

Thats the welding done and so far a layer of hammerite to lock the rust out. Will get another coat of hammerite on then a good layer of waxoyl on it before giving the whole lower section a clean and wax. Then tech II panels and sideskirts can go back on with the peace of mind that i have done my best to prevent further corrosion.

Welding is not my bag to be honest. I have a great contact who does fantastic work and understands my budget. He is passionate about keeping old cars like these on the road. He only wanted £80 for all this so I gave him £100. I know I'll be needing him again in the future.

As my car has the tech II bodykit the lower wings are hidden with plastic panelling so I could make as much mess with the hammerite as I liked. Doesn't look pretty but no rust getting into there again.

CLEAR INDICATORS & REPEATERS April 2012

New update time. Since getting the welding sorted and finishing the interior I have been doing some little jobs on the exterior. Not much but make all the difference.

First a reminder of the front end

MOT, COOLANT & THERMOSTAT CHANGE April 2012

MOT time :?

Took the car for it's MOT this week.

It failed on the following:

Front to rear brake pipe corroded -- replaced
handbrake working at 4% -- adjusted
No ABS light -- loose bulb!
Headlight not working -- loose wire
side repeater not working -- Bulb holder pushed back in!
One rear tyre cut -- Ordered 2x Toyos
Track rod end needs replaced
Headlights need adjusted
High CO reading

Also noticed that the car seemed to be running cold so decided to change thermostat. The coolant was in a disgusting state so went for the whole drain, clean and flush.

This is what came out!

Headlights removed so i can soak the adjusters in WD40 overnight
