E30 Calypso 4.0 V8 Part 2! Engines in,wheels on etc etc

Well as some of you may know since selling the last one  i have decided to start from scratch and build another one, this time round a bit more power/mods etc.

this has been going on for about 1 year now,it all started off when i was browsing on ebay and came across someone selling a M60 3.0 engine & gearbox complete for £250,so i sat there thinking f*ck it lets build another one.

so off i went to buy this engine and gearbox, obviously i was only intrested in the gearbox/clutch and flywheel, but for £250 even that was a steal!

so after purchasing that,i was on the look out for a 740i or a 540i,then i found a L reg e32 740i auto which had covered 98,000 miles with a recent top end rebuild costing nearly 2.5k with invoices to prove.

got it back, took the engine out and scrapped the rest, after that over the next few months bought some engine and gearbox mounts from GAMA motorsport, went to my BMW main dealer and spent nearly £450 on new seals/gaskets etc.

over the next few months i decided to change all the seals, gaskets on the engine, then came up the famous BBB lightened billet steel flywheel, which i thought i just had to get.

along with that i bought a brand new clutch and some custom manifolds.

so then i bought a 2 door 320i auto shell the other week and collected it the other day,for £250 i think was a steal, and was only around the corner from me.

it has a few dings,a scrape on the passenger side rear quarter, but no rust!also has full OBC,rear opening quarters, etc.

Heres some pics-

so here are some parts/goodies which i have purchased over the last few months which are for this project-

-Front Recaro SR(i think there called)
-17" Azev A Alloys 7.5J FRONT & 8.5J REARS winkeye
-Smoked Front Headlights
-Rear Smoked Genuine MHW Tail Lights
-365mm 3 Spoke Alpina Steering Wheel
-Genuine BMW E30 Armrest
-E30 M3 Rear Bench
-Gaz GOLD Coilover Suspension with Alloy top mounts etc

Pics arent great but more will be added very soon.

in the next few weeks this will be updated quite rapidly as i want to get a move on with this.

all comments welcome!

well finally got a start to it this week.

started to strip the engine bay down completely,as i want to get it painted this weekend.

took the m20 lump out and started to strip down the wiring/headlights/front panel etc.

also got the rad out to see how good of a fit it was,and turned out to be 100% perfect fit,as if it was made for an e30.

not that many pics but more to come as work progresses.

Shaz,
What flywheel and clutch are you using? the standard 3L unit is no good, it slips , trust me! I just ordered a Spec 3+ clutch from the states which can handle the 400nm torque on the 3L BBB flywheel.
Best of luck, all the bits look like a great collection to make a great car!

kerrie at the moment its bolted up with the standard 3.0 clutch.

flywheel is BBB flywheel which richard sorted me out with.

so that clutch is no good :(

which one shall i use,and where can i get it from, also how much?

diddnt you say to skim the flywheel by 1mm?

anyway kerrie need your help, need to know what servo to use to mount nehind the headlight.

The standard 3L clutch is only good for 300nm and the standard 4L engine is 400nm, I ordered a SPEC 3 clutch from the USA on ebay, took 3 weeks, cost £340 as opposed to the UK distributor charging around 700. It has stronger springs and a brass clutch plate. the 3L unit slipped in 3rd 4th and 5th at 4000rpm.

I thought you were using the hydraulic brake servo? the complete vacuum system from a 540i works with a few mods, my opinion is the hydraulic is the best fit and brakes are immense.

kerrie i think i will go for the hydraulic setup.

this clutch problem is really going to delay this project now,was hoping to get engine in by the end of this week so it could go to the exhaust shop to get the exhaust done, which i dont think is going to happen now.

isnt there no one else which i could go to to get a clutch this week?

well finally got the engine bay this afternoon, well chuffed as the colour turned out to be spot on on what i thought it to be.

next is to fix everything back together, retape the wiring to neaten it up,install the z3 rack/painted subframe etc etc.

*****UPDATE 29/07/2011****

well got some more work done this week, was really put back when kerrie told me that the original clutch was no good for the lightened flywheel so while that is on order(bloody 3 weeks wait)i thought id tackle minor jobs.

so go the engine bay wiring done, bought some cloth tape which was used from factory from my local electrical shop.

and started to tape up the wiring loom.

well while still waiting for the clutch i thought id tackle the front suspension and cross member.

so decided to wax oil the front inner arches and install the powder coated front cross member.

then put my front coilovers on along with the front camber adjustable top mounts and eibach front anti roll bar.

more to come as i will be doing the same to the rear end this week.

Those top mounts need rotating 180 degrees unless you're planning on running some nice positive camber.

Looking forward to seeing the engine going in 8)
