Is it a genuine Hartge M30 engine or just a couple of bolt on twinkets? i.e rocker cover.

Keep it, don't sell it yet, you've only finished it, drive the car around for a while, you'll change your mind.

i think this one is 240bhp....not a hartge nut so i don't exactly know for sure, cam has defo been changed and the ecu mapped by them,as for other mods i don't know for sure, the pistons looked like non standard items when i had the head off it. but i'm sure somebody on here knows exactly what went into the hartge engines. did anybody like what i did with the rocker cover? i tried to make the engine bay a little brighter than the normal black finish...

They have high comp pistons, chipped ecu, cam etc... 240bhp

Well you certainly don't see many Hartge M30 engine's around, will be worth it in the long run for sure
Just keep at it and don't lose hope, plenty of help available on here

'fraid not.
Hartge H5 conversion of the M30B35 consisted of a remaped ECU, camshaft, Hartge headgasket, valve cover, exhaust system and on LHD cars a six branch manifold.
No high comp pistons.

this one definately had the six branch but it wouldn't fit the e30 chassis...thanks for the info though, the pistons don't seem different to you bss325? the standard pistons don't usually have those angular valve cutouts, but please correct me if i'm wrong
they usually have the sort of circular cutouts on the piston tops, maybe the pistons were changed some part of its life? anybodys guess, they were in good nick though after a clean up..

The cut outs are normal, they are standard M30 Pistons.
I bet it goes well though? It has a better spec than most home brew M30 conversions.

I'm going to have to disagree, they are definitely high comp pistons in there.
Hatge used 10.5:1 compression mahle pistons.

If this is a H5 donor then 240 is correct, the pecking order sort of goes like this -
E30
H23 - 170
H26 - 190
H27 - 205
H28 - 210
H27sp - 220
H35 - 250

H36 (M3) - 350
Other models 5/6/7 series
H5s - 240
H5sp - 254
H6s - 240
H6sp - 254
H7s - 240
etc

Yeah there is a total BMW mag feature with my H28, Ian's H27 cab and Alan's H36 M3.The basis is describing Hartge conversions as an alternative to other performance options such as Alpina. JAnuary 2010 issue iirc

it pulls very strong throughout the whole rpm range, the sound when its at 2500-5000rpm is music to my ears. and i'm quite proud of my find...just glad the chap who sold me the 535 didn't have a clue what hartge meant!!

With all due respect, wherever/whoever you are getting your info from is incorrect.
The 240bhp H5 conversion does not use forged pistons.
This is the 1988 Hartge catalouge and it out lines the details for all the conversions available at the time including the E34 H5.
Alpina used forged pistons in their 260bhp/254bhp M30B35 used in the B6,B10 and B11 models. Maybe you are confusing the two engines?

H5 had a cam and ecu upgrade and a fruity zaust

, the oily bits are the same as any 5/735i, M30
I know the donor car your engine came from... it was white wasn't it ?

They're not like the pistons in my M30, and with my M30B35 coming from a E32 735i auto i doubt they're anything special...

I have rebuilt a couple of m30s, and they were not standard pistons in there. Are we sure the engine is out of a 5?

Steve, The late e24 635 highline used the same engine (m30b35) and management (Motronic 1.3) E32 and E34.
