My E30 - M50 conversion
Moderator: martauto
Hi all,
i've been lurking on the forum for a bit and decided to post,
i currently own, and have owned my audi a3 for the past 3 years, however, i've opted for an additional change and have purchased myself an '89 dolphin grey E30.
it started off as automatic and a standard 325i, but was destined for a change before i'd even picked it up.
so, its in the middle of having an M50 engine conversion, the interior has been changed from fabric to leather and all we need for the auto - manual gbox conversion is the gear selector.
i'll get pictures up asap, i need to up load them.

so, i bought this, a dolphin grey 325i with 167k on it, its pretty clean with the main obvious flaw the tiny dent in the door (see pic), progress pics to follow
It seems to sit stupidly high at the moment (even for a standard car) so on the list is to drop it, it just needs a gear selector to make it scompletely manual, there is a list of parts needed for it but we are hoping that in 2-3 weeks it should be driveable, then its just changing the details with the DVLA, tax, MOT and drive, woo.
Im on the look out for new wheels, steering wheel, HU, speakers, smoked side repeaters, and if i can find one then front splitter, i think thats about it at the moment.
It'll eventually have LSD too, and hopefully make it over to Nurburg.

a few of the audi for good measure

The whole project is being done on overtime money as i dont have the heart to sell the audi at the moment,
Blitz, do you spend much time in Basildon? its where im based
The donor car, my E30 and the inspiration, my friends E30

The auto-manual conversion begins

Leather in

Im not technical minded so i got given the job of writing down the wiring

Good to see another m50 lump being done! Good luck! although it looks like you've done alot already!

thanks, yeah, most of it has been done already, theres just a list of parts that need to be got and fitted now but the majority of the engine work is done.
the white e30 lives in shoebury but its not touring.
if you see us out and about together on a sat night in future there will be me (eventually) a black very low touring and the white e30. (with a few golfs and a yellow corrado thrown in)
im really excited about getting it complete.
the only downside is we appear to have lost the manifolds from the 525 so im having to seek them again (think they went with the 525 when it got scrapped) but apart from that it seems to be going smoothly

I think to be fair, most people spend as little time in Basildon as possible..bula_82 wrote:Blitz, do you spend much time in Basildon? its where im based
Good to see another 24v'er, unsual for it to be in a more door though!
I didnt want anything but a 4dr, which is strange as anything else imo looks better with 2 (or3) doors, but for some reason i think it just suits the E30 more.Jhonno wrote:Good to see another 24v'er, unsual for it to be in a more door though!
as for basildon, haha, it is pretty terrible.
and ive asked my mate, they were M52 manifolds i had that we lost

More doors are the best ha.
This is the 4th M50 E30 i've built.
We did have the 328i manifolds, but somehow managed to get scrapped with the donar car.
If i stop been lazy it should be on the road by the end of this month.
You might see my white E30 in the basildon area as unfortunately i work there lol..

Parts do help.
I got an M52 in the back of the garage waiting to go in the white one.
Need to stop been lazy, finish bulas car, then my turbo 205, then M52 in the more door lol.
And i still got all the turbo stuff for it, from my £50 thread ages back.Plenty to keep me busy then.

Update, taken from another forum, the car is coming along very nicely and is almost finished.
The following weekend i visited the car again, the aim for today was to get the gear box sorted and the auto-manual conversion completed, which was achieved all bar a gear selector

No pictures of the weekends work as i wasnt there but i am assured there is pics on the way at some point,
However, after much fuss and the car being a right pain, the following has been completed over the weekend.
Brown temp sender fitted.
Gear selectors fitted, link bar modified for the perfect shift.
Powersteering pump fitted, new line half fitted.
Pulleys refitted, plus belts.
Starter motor wiring done.
Inlet manifold fitted.
Connectors and vacuum lines on inlet fitted.
Petrol lines traced and fitted.
we are well on the way there now. weather permitting work continures this friday / saturday

Taken from another forum (02.04.09)
(my name to the local car lot is bullet, hence bulletmobile, long story including brands hatch and an MX5!)
Wooo more progress on the bulletmobil.
Built a prop last night. Its a proper pain in the a55 job, but went pretty smoothly last night.
This involved, seperating the old prop to get the E30 centre bearing which was to be used on the new prop. Which considted of E36 diesel front half and E36 318i M44 rear half.
To seperate a prop is a right pain. Theres a nut of the end of one of the half shafts which is almost imposible to move, this locks the splines together where they meet.
Easiest way round this was to clamp it in my vice, lock the bottom of the prop with my feet and twist the vice. Once thats off you can knock the halfs apart.
Then you got to get the center bearing off which is pressed. So you remove the pesky locking ring with some needle nose pliers, which just about works cause its ont of those hardcore ones that don't like to move.
Then the hard bit of getting the bearing off the prop. You can't hit it off from the outside cause the rubber donut just absorbs it and the bearing doesn't move.
So have to come up with some random thing with turning my ramps upside down mounting the inner and slapping the shaft withthe sledge hammer. Works a treat.
Fitting the new one together is the reverse, and you got to ensre its pressed one enough that the dust shield is clipped in properly by the circlip otherwise they ding about like a mofo.
Job is a good un. Quick check under the car and looks ready to fit. So put it in the car for safe keeping. Will fit this weekend.
Then torqued up all the inlet manifold bolts and throttle body, need to fit accelerator cable to that. Then work out how the inlet tubing to MAF is going to run.
Removing ABS this weekend so that gives space for the air filter.
Still need to make an adaptor for the power steering.
Exhaust manfolds = Might make a start of these over the weekend

Loads more progress on the bullet mobile over the weekend.
Custom made prop fitted perfectly. New water pump fitted, which was needed as old one had plastic impellers. Put all the belts back on.
Found the throttle cable in a bush with the correct end on, so throttles set up now.
Bled the clutch.
Andy mounted the clutch reserviour and removed the ABS unit, then repeatedly failed to make a brake line.
So I had to do the brake lines on the saturday, which I did all three with ease and actually looks pretty neat.
Bleed the brakes, and its the best feeling peddle ever!!! So everything that way is tip top.
