335i 'shabby' project

Hey folks,

After owning a fair few E30's many moons ago and after using a mates 325i in the drift arena at the BMW show at Santa pod this year, i just had to buy another one.

I was actually after a touring, but i stumbled on a 1988 320i Convertible. It has a 2.5 in there already which was a bonus.

Here is a pic of it from the eBay advert.........

Image

Hmmmmm, sexual i hear you say.

On arrival to the sellers house, i noticed that the roof was in pretty good order, although the rear screen had gone smokey. In all fairness, apart from the few small car park dings on it, the body is in very good condition and i can see no rust.

I paid £475 for shabby. It has 6 months MOT and 5 months tax.

I'm majorly into drifting and as the E30 is obviously RWD, it was obvious what was going to happen, so i took it to santa pod on a DWYB day in completely standard form. Needless to say, it was comical........

After nearly falling out a few times due to the stock suspension and seats, i decided a bucket seat, harness, chopped springs and a welded diff needed to be applied.

I was asked to do the DWYB demo at the Modified Live show at Snetterton. I usually drift a Nissan Skyline R32, but as the car wasn't ready, i took the shabby. Needless to say, with the recent modifications i't was much more enjoyable......

After soon getting bored with the power of the 2.5, i purchased a E34 535i sport for the engine transplant.....

Image

I did an arena essex drift day/comp in it just to make sure the engine etc was in good order as the car has no T&T. It pulled superbly, i even managed to qualify 1st in it although i made a very amateur mistake in the top 8 and span.

The engine was pulled from the E34 and it is currently sitting in my garage waiting for the shabbys 2.5 to be pulled out.

Since the shabby was all in great order, i took it to a drift event at Norfolk arena, i took one of my sponsors with me to teach him the basics of drifting. Unfortunately, he decided to put the shabby into a wall LOL. Amazingly it didn't cause a great deal of damage, but as he owns a body shop, all is well LOL.

Image

Image

I'd like to thank my mates for there drawings on the back of the shabby haha!

On the way home from Norfolk, the diff mounting point gave way, maybe as it has a solid diff mount, so i got a lift home with a mate and collected a transporter to rescue the shabby.

I'll keep you all informed on the shabbys progress.

Possibly fella, It's only ever been to the pod on one occasion. At the BMW show i was in a white 4dr 325, it had a black front Mtec 2 replica bumper on it.

I do understand what your saying about the use of the cab, but i am restoring it along the way. It will have a full respray in the stock colour, i'm also after a non leather interior with black trim.

I'm not out there to wreck it, i'm just modifying it to a basic drift spec and then slowly restoring it whilst i still use it.

Fair play does look like you well into drifting watching that video.
Its something ive dabbled in a bit and would love to get into. Keep up the good work, e30s are awesum drift cars :drive:
U show them all up in their skylines and s13/s14s.
Will you be upgrading eventually to coilovers and pollybushing it??
Cheers
Chris

Cheers Chris.

I actually use a Skyline for comps, but it's not quite finished for the new season yet.

I compete in the pro catorgary in the british drift championship, i only did one round this year in a Lexus IS200 due to having an operation on my knee.

The E30 is just a 'fun' daily drifter that i intend to make great.

No match for your cabby when its done tho

HAHA, Yep, 4dr Skyline, In my opinion it is a way better chassis than a 2dr, you just get a small amount of flex even with a rollcage. I personally think they look better over the 2dr and i like to be different.

Chris,

I've been drifting for nearly 3 years but been going sideways for 17 years LOL, I started drifting in a Volvo 340 1.4, i wanted to get good control of a very under powered car and move up, i then bought a Nissan 200sx S14a, i decided the car wasn't for me as it just didn't have enough torque. I then moved onto a RB20 (2000cc) R32Gtst Skyline. I used this for over 12 months and was a fantastic car, i miss it. Now my Skyline (pict above) is a RB26DET, when mapped should be around 500bhp-450ft/lb. Can't wait to get it finished.

My engine.....

My old R32....

I'm an instructor at Santa Pod DWYB (drift what ya brung), I also instruct/judge/do licensing for the BDC (British drift championship)

Awesum! A mate of a mate is a sponsored drifter, he started with an s13. I'm on the lookout for a cabby project atm. Used to have a 325 sport but it rusted away :-(
You ever made any 'how to drift' videos?? Been going sideways for years, but would be interested how to do it 'properly' like.
That your full time job? or as well as? what an awesum job anyway!
Cheers

Looks good.

Stuff the purists. cars were built to be thrashed.

Personally doing it in a cab adds serious comical value.

Weeeeeeeeeeey, 2 people understand why i'm using a cabby.......... for the comedy factor!!

As you've probably all gathered, i don't really worry about what people think, i like cars, thats it, i modify them to how i feel necessary using parts i decide to use. Stuff the purists is a quote i tend to use a far bit.

Stevo, nice angry looking E30 you have there fella.

Chris, No not a full time job, it's sometime i just spend the majority of my spare time doing, i love it to bits, aslong as the folks i'm teaching dont just do donuts all day as they'll need there interior valeting haha!

Not had a chance to do anything on the shabby over the weekend/today, i've still suffering for getting too drunk on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Hopefully i'll be getting the remainders of the E34 gone this week, so i can bring the shabby back home as it's at a sponsors garage at the moment.

I am looking to drop in a 3.5 in the new year so there could be 2 of them at Pod soon!

Good luck with the car mate! :thumb:

Mark, i think i remember your car. I was busy that day and didnt actually get much time to drift myself. I believe 3.5 is the best option. When are you at another DWYB?? I'll come and say Hi and jump in with you if you like.

James, Yep LOL. Relaxed is the key, never get flustered or you'll make errors :)

RSlut, YAY, 3 people now get it :)

Here is a vid from Snetterton on the small DWYB area.......
