Si, I would say they wouldn't be all the same currently due to the nature of the casting process, and the apparent lack of finishing done

if you get scared maybe chat to MED in Sussex about just cleaning the ports up, sure it won't be too expensive

I'm not going to change the shape of the ports. I'm going to treat it like flatting back orange peely paint. just get them so the low spots are just about visible, no further. The basic shape of the ports cannot alter drastically if I stick to those rules.

Dave, the head looks likeits been reshaped in the combustion chamber area.

Now looks hemispherical to me, ala Alpina.

That's my head.
What would be the purpose of that to the combustion chamber?

Well i don't know the ins and outs but the standard head is that of a swirl design which is different. Alpina seem to like Hemi heads. I think it alters power or the way the fuel/air mix in the chamber i don't really know.

Early CVH Engines have hemispherical combustion chamber shape and later Lean Burn CVH's have a different shape combustion chamber, more kideny shaped.

The earlier ones fly!

Right, Vines rang me today. "Mr White, all of your shiney components are now here ready for collection".

So I picked them all up and NOW the fun starts.

Don't look like the best part of 500 quid laid out do it?? 8O

I've not got the shells out yet but they look IDENTICAL even down to the part number stamp. The only difference is the part number on the packet and ones got a blob of red paint and the other a blob of blue. I f*ckin' hate having my trousers pulled down so there'd better be more of a difference that that!

We think they must be slightly different in their coating on top of the brass as oneside will be subject to more pressure when the engine is running possibly.

On the power stroke during the cycle maybe?

I've been round in circles on this one. The ETK (same as realoem) shows 6 blues and 6 reds per engine. The blues go in the conrod and the reds in the end cap. The Bentley manual states that "reds are the most common"! So I ordered all reds, only for vines to come back to me to say thet the system would not allow 12 of the same colour shells to be ordered on one engne. The system states 6 blues and 6 reds. So thats what I've ended up with. As Simon says, it must be down to the thickness of the white metal coating being thicker on the thrust side. Heres the realoem link and note 6 of each (no's 5 and 6) listed.

My mains are all spotless so I've not had them out, But i've just checked Realoem f*ck me, it's even more confusing. No. 4 is a top shell and No.5 is an endcap shell.
It lists 3 colours for each. So do you pair whites with whites, greens with greens?

Can you not speak to the workshop controller nicely and look on his TIS(or BMW equivilent?). It should show what bearings go where...hopefully! If not, its pretty stupid and the techs would just be guessing-back 10 years ago when they did this sort of thing.

they seemed to think the workshop wouldn't have the material anymore.

But there are loads of torque settings we need to find out also, sequences do's and donts!

Trevor, If it's going to be anywhere it'll be on the microfiche, they are genuine BMW dealer issue, there is a whole ring binder full covering all models. One of the slides is just titled technical Information, the others are workshop manuals, ABS manuals etc, just need to fire up the machine (which i also gave Si).

Got some more done tonight. First thing was to have a clean up before opening any new bags of parts.

Image

First up I rebuilt the oil pump. I could have bitten the bullet and done anothe £100+ on a new pump but you can rebuilt these for half the price. Here it is stripped with the new parts. The cogs were worn as you can see in the photos. The gold sections are wear. The top plate had minimal marks so was linished to remove them using a thick plate of glass and very fine wet and dry. You have to have a perfectly flat surface for this. I also replace the pressure valve spring for good measure.

Next the head had a final thinners clean off before the valves went back in. I lapped them all in the other night. New stem seals were fitted before putting the valves back in.

Finally the cam was cleaned and put back.

Remember I was going to play with the exhausts ports well heres how they turned out. Nothing as polished as Oakeys but much better all the same.

and for a comparison heres what they were like

Thats the lot for the head now until it's ready to go back on. Just prior to that I'll reassemble the rockers.

Ports were done with emery cloth just to smoth them out the wet and dry followed but a vigorous buff with autosol.

Cam? Not at the mo. Running out of money to be honest. If it don't make the power I'm looking for then I'll maybe think again but just can't warrant it at the mo. Like i said, i'm not after high power figures just strong torque.
