Sweet ride dude! I bought almost exactly the same motor as this, but from 1986 last weekend. Windows don't work when drivers side door is shut, sometimes both doors. Seems like a connection fault in the wiring where it plugs in at the A-pillar. Havn't bothered to have a look yet, although driving along with the door open to undo it is less than convenient!Laurence wrote:
It needs a new set of engine mounts and the electric windows dont work when the doors are closed :s
Are these common faults/hard to replace?
I'll prob stick some manual winders on, leccy windows suck!
Got back in my shit-box mk1 golf today after driving the bm for the last few days... such a contrast! The feeling of speed in the mk1 is awesome, but the bm is something else.. GT car for sure!
The colour and code should be on the passenger side suspension turret in the engine bay.Laurence wrote:I'm not sure of the colour tbh, I was told it is calypso, where is the paint code and what code am I looking for....Coops90 wrote:Nice car.
Sure it isn't Burgundrot though? Doesn't look like calypso to me?
I could be wrong but calypso seems brighter to me. Both nice colours anyway.

The LSD could actually make it understeer more..Laurence wrote:Some pictures from the autotest i did on saturday, was having problems with snap understeer which i have pinned on worn balljoints and having an open diff, all of which will be changed shortly
Well I've replaced both wishbones and bushes on the front, had to get hold of a few parts that were broken. Next on the list is some droplinks as they look worn, any reccomendations on what droplinks are the best to get? Bmw ones or are ebay items just as good?
RE: the colour, I will look at the colour in the bay today, take a picture and stick it up
And I think a LSD is a must for this car, will just make the rear so much more predictable, progressive and make it handle alot better
Some boring pictures of replacement of the front arms lol:

Right, well i have started replacing the drop links on the fron tof the car.
Did one, was a pain in the arse :-/ Had to cut it off and grind it back as the bush was just spinning so couldn't get a grip on it. I refitted the new one but it seems like its at a funny angle... took some pictures to show you guys, is that the right hole on the arb ive put it on?

A quick response would be great as im planning on tackling the other side today

I think for the sort of 'work' you are doing with the car an LSD will make it 'worse' in sense of getting it to turn in and not understeer. If you are suffering with unpredicable handling etc I would suggest you need to look at your chassis setup.Laurence wrote:And I think a LSD is a must for this car, will just make the rear so much more predictable, progressive and make it handle alot better
For more track type work an LSD would be of benefit, as long as you don't go for too much lock.
I think a softer front arb would help me. I am hoping to do track days next year so LSD will be useful in the long run. For auto testing a rwd is not ideal unless you have a caterham type vehicle. Small fwd cars fair better. I want to review the front suspension set up aswell hopefully either some proper coilovers or a nice adjustable damper and the right set up spring.
I'm quite looking foreword to getting it set up to my driving style

In the above droplink pictures. If I put the droplink on the further mounting hole that should soften it shouldn't it? And I think I will be investing in some stiffer springs soon
what do all the track boys run on the front around 155lb?

Erm...
Try 350lb minimum as a starting point. I was running 510lb on something I still drove on the road.
B6?/B8? (the beefier ones) Billies will run out of damping around 400lb.
Lengthen the lever arm to soften, shorted to stiffen.

You will need to uprate your rear springs also with that..
I ran 350/500 for a while and it worked well with a 6 pot up front and B8's. Which is KW coilover rates. If you want to go 400lb up front, to keep the same ratio, you'll need a rear spring of 575lb.
End of the day handling is down to what the driver likes.
You need to set the spring rates up, then tune with rollbars. Ride heights effect corner weights for example. You can spend £££££ tuning and changing suspension parts.
