Howdy, Ive had my e30 318IS for the Last 6 years, and its have a good, used life with me being on the road as my Daily for nearly 5 of those, when i Bought it it was a standard 318IS in brilliant pink (very faded paint) missing its front lip spoiler, I bought it off a guy in Tallagh (Dublin) handed over 950 euros and drove it home, it was also taxed and Nct'd:D

so then what to do with it, originally i didnt know, go euro or tech 2 kitted, after some head scratching i went tech 2, so stripped it down to the shell, it was very very clean so only needed very minor rust repairs, and it got a full respray in 05' along with replacing every bushing shocks, springs, brakes ect, all new stuff went in,

it engine had 102000 on it and pulled like a train but had no history, so i just monded it and serviced it every 4-5000 miles, it developed the deadly chain rattle at the start of this summer with 204,000 on the clock, and i replaced the tensioner, but it was only a temp fix and the chain and guides were worn, ond one day coming home from work it smashed the top guide on start up! so that was that, rebuild the M42 or conversion time,

i looked into the prices of rebuilding it, (I had a set of s50ITB's that were modified to fit the 318IS head) and to get full use of those id need to build it upto 2.1 alot of work and money to produce maybe 220BHP, cost outweighd the benefits,

So i Bought an S50b30 engine, box, ecu, all ancillary's needed from the donor car to do the conversion and its currently up in AC cars getting done by Dicko a genius at these conversions, hopefully soon enough ill have it back done and dusted:D

Progress so far:
Old Engine Coming out,

The Car is Filthy, ill have to keep it off building sites after this:o :o

Old Exhaust system off

DIY Rad pipe fixing, :o (This is what happens when engine mounts let go)

My own subfame was badly cracked seems to be a problem with 4 pots, so I Got another front Subframe from a 6cylinder car and dicko set about re-enforcing it, as when a 1.8 can pull engine mounting points thru a subframe imagine what a 3.0l could do:eek:

Image

New Brake Servo, smaller dual diaphram unit from a Renault Clio, smaller in size but will have good pedal feel, the servo also needs to be moved to the left on the bulkhead to clear it inlet plenum on the s50

The Power steering mounts only come with 3 spot welds on them from the factory, so Dicko decided to seam weld them all around

Old Engine mounting points on the original subframe:eek:

All Brackets and fixing that were no longer needed were removed sanded and in primer waiting a lick of paint

Subframe finished awaiting some paint:D

That's going to be a great car, although I fear for it's survival on stock anchors!

Great looking car - from another 'brilliant pink' S50 owner :D 8)

Ive just strengthened a spare subframe for mine so its all ready to swap when I overhaul the suspension this summer.
Did you use a particular paint for the subframe? I want a decent covering on mine so it doesnt rust to quick.

Mine has been running on standard size brakes for the last 6 months of everyday use. They are fine if you drive normally, but a bit of fast road driving does heat them up damn quick 8O

Perhaps I should slow down if you guys can run with 300bhp on standard brakes :?

Jesus. We fitted the S50 to Dan's car went out and turned E30M3 brakes blue all round! I wouldn't be risking 260mm penny stoppers. My 315's all round are ok, but I'm feeling the need for an upgrade!

e301988325i wrote:Perhaps I should slow down if you guys can run with 300bhp on standard brakes :?
Bhp is only really part to do with fading the brakes - 60mph is still 60mph whether youre in a 318i or 300bhp 325i turbo.
A higher bhp will obviously create more speed between corners for example, but then for a sensibly driven road going car that wont be a problem - you are less likely to be trying to slow the car from high speeds over and over like on a track.

Where the S50 conversion falls down (and is in need of better brakes), is on the extra weight of the engine which really gives the standard brakes a hard time under heavy braking. As I said, drive it hard and the brakes do suffer, but as an everyday car (that sticks to the speed limits etc) with decent discs, pads and fluid, the brakes are fine for the job.

Obviously, I havent fitted an S50 to my car to drive it slowly, so I am in the process of a brake upgrade for mine, but mainly because it will be seeing some track action this year - that I do not want to attempt on standard brakes 8O

Those wheels are 7.5x17' but i do have a set of Original 15' BBS'
That I intend to run on trackdays, (when ive the brakes done)

So possibly will be talking to u about something to fit behind them if i dont go 5 stud altogether!

I wont be driving the bag out of this car, too much time and money gone ito it to thrash it on standard brakes atleast :o

I thought e30M3 Brakes would be perfect for near 300 BHP?? maybe 5 stud with evo struts and brakes would be the only way to go so

We've done brackets for the E36 strut and 325mm discs (prototyped but waiting for test-fitting results - lines and clearance), but the same calipers fit both brackets!

ie, you can change from 4-stud to 5-stud (e36?) and keep the WMS calipers/lines/pads etc. winkeye

Just a thought, not sure how that ties in with the M3 struts though...?

I should be ok then. I dont need to stop from 130mph, just slow it down for the 50mph speed camera
