E30 Zone

I have a problem with my temp gauge. Fine up to normal running temp and then goes loopy up to the top temp and then flicks up and down stupidly. I can then turn engine off and when ignition in possition 2 without engine running still goes silly.

I have checked the whole engine and she DEFINITELY is not over heating and her normal running temp is just under the half-way mark. Ihave changed the temp sensor thinking that this would be the cure but no joy.

So come on, rack those brains and share your ideas with me!!!!

Earth points (screws) on the back of the Instrument cluster.

Take it out, and loosen then tighten all the philips head screws you can see.

Mine used to do the same. I changed the stat, the sender, the temp gauge.

Then finally the printed circuit board on the back of the dashboard. The last one finally cured it.

Remove the instrument cluster and tighten the wee nut on the back of the temp guage, which is 8mm IIRC. Hopefully that should solve your problem.

thanks every one for your ideas, got behind the temp gauge in the dash, gave the connector a wiggle with ignition in position 2 and hey prestow the gauge flickered like mad!!. Have pushed and secured connector more tightly and now working perfect so was bad contact.

The connector doesn't do "bad contact", if the lock is engaged. All you've done is disturbed the area, and made a temporary cure.
As stated no less than three times above, the brass nut is the problem!
