air or fuel starvation perhaps dude ??

new filters for both aint gonna break the bank so worth a shot, then if still no good I suspect a duff TPS not sending the WOT signal to the ECU,

Keep us posted Mike

That happened on my 316i and i was informed that it was more than likely a worn cam. Apparently its a common problem with the m40 engine?

Cheers for the advice Ant

 Hope its not a worn cam

I was also thinking it maybe an airflow meter problem?

Cam's knackered as above, you need to replace it, probably do the tappets and the oil spray bar at the same time.

do the filters first Mike, you never know, I've fixed "head gaskets" on M62 engines with a new thermostat before

dont give up till all the options are exhausted !

Yes mate i will do, Im going down GSF tommorow morning to buy the filters, I have a 318i Touring aswell so i might swap a few bits over to see if any differences are made.

Another thing is that the cars fine from cold?

hi does any one know rough price for this job my 316i been like that for a while and i have changed every thing as well my next call was may be a fault with the fuel pump as now and aagain it seem to loose all power and goes down to about 5 mile an hour before picking up speed again. allways on the m6 as well.

Isn't the sign of a worn camshaft mean the car won't rev past 5k in 2nd and 3rd gear? For M40's engines

I've got similar symptoms on my M20, is it common on these engines too?

If the engine is fine when cold, isn't it about time someone mentioned the ECU water temp sensor?

I thought a worn camhaft would make a noise? it seems strange why it works fine from cold,

Check the airflow meter.. It could be the temp sensor - its at the front of the meter

Does the point in the rev range that it do it change with temperature?

Okay do this, when the car is warmed up drive it in second right to 5k till it wont go futher, then change to third if the car has a momentary loss of power i can tell you exactly what it is.

Yes a good M20 can be had for little money. The M40 is good engine for its time, but its not worth fixing. Get a M42 in there its much better but you might find that it will cost you alot more than getting a M20 in.

Yer a m20 would be nice, but i need to keep it standard due to insurance costs, So another m40 it is, or just the head

318is are only one insurance group higher than an 318i, but as Demlot says the engines cost more to buy than an M20
