I got a high pitched whine from the engine last night like on the other thread here, this morning opened it up started it and the pulleys with the alternator and the water pump were not moving. took out the radiator and tried roatating each one the alternator moves freely but the water pump one (with a fan on the end?) is siezed and not moving, left it at that for now, need some advice as to whats wrong or what to do next please :)

Strip out the waterpump and replace, if yoy mean the waqter pump isnt turning, they are prone to giving up the ghost ie coming away from their shafts I believe.

That's true, I think there are (were?) two types of pump available, plastic & metal impeller. I think the metal ones were the ones that went but not too sure...

If i were to remove the belt that joins alternator, shaft and water pump that wouldn't miss-align anything important would it?

Its the one with the metal impeller you want, the plastic ones die!

Dont worry henna, they seem quite cheap (compared with 90 quid for bmw original) and should be resonable quality :) Il post back on what the KWP pump from above is like.

Will do austin cheers :) Is it possible for the pump to leak coolant into the engine/gas leaking into the coolant if the seal is worn?

no what i ment is ive done a few rush job water pumps if it doesnt have a tight seal it will be hard to bleed out and the worst leak thats a lot of stripping down to do just minutes of cleaning a new gasket will be included in the kit its happened to me going to the bother of stripping it down fitting the new pump building it back up poor in the coolent in and it running down the block.O and the vis fan has a reverse tred so to take it off u go like ur tight n it

Got the old pump off, somehow its the back of the axle bent or maybe the impeller warped somehow, one of the sides of the impeller ground a channel into the pump casing. The kwp pump form euro parts looks alright, made of the same looking stuff as the original with a dark metal impeller, came with a gasket in the box.
