E30 Zone

Filled up the old steed the other day and since then the fuel guage only varies in the top 25% of the guage.

Have any of you guys been through this and how easy is the repair/service/replacement of the affected bits ?

Maybe just a case of replacign the sender, do you know if its a bitch of a job ?

If it's the same as 7 series (I suspect it will be) then it's most likely just dirt in the sender unit (under oval panel under right rear seat on mine) The cure on the old 7's was to remove & clean out the sender unit thoroughly & make sure any connections inside the tank are clean and secure.

If you can't be bothered (as I can't! ) then the warning lamp usually still works as it's a seperate sensor & should light up with just over a gallon left.

I have a similar problem only mine has three states, it will stay near the top or it will judder about like one of those old graphic equalisers, or it will just sit at the bottom off the gauge as if the ignition were off! All three conditions are flippin annoying!

I did start noticing this a couple of days after I installed my sounds, which did indeed involve having the rear seats up! Theres another job for the weekend then....

I read somewhere that the earth for the fuel gauge is via the threaded stud at the back of the gauge which holds it in the dashboard. As the car ages oxidation or a loose nut can increase the resistance and cause strange readings or permanently full reading.
Removing the gauge and cleaning up the threaded bits at the back should work but it might be easier just to wire in a separate earth to the nearest body earth connection.
