I have standard cloth seats in my 325 and the bolster is just breaking through , is it possible to remove the whole of the seat covering and transfer it across , the new one is on a passenger seat in a breakers at the mo , its a four door so there wont be an issue with side levers .

Anybody know ?

Yes, 2 door, 4 door, left and right, all bits interchangeable. Always try to fit a left seat back on the right, and a right seat back on the left.
It puts the previously unworn area where the wear is,and pro0tects the already part worn area.

After you've been playing with E30s for a few years, you'll know the answera to most of these questios as well.
Seat backs complete are swappable, and IIRC the seat bases are made from identical parts - just assembled differently.
The cloth parts of both the bases and backs are easily removed and replaced if you note carefully where all the clips and rings go. If you do strip your seat base down to the metal, check for cracks where thr metal tube that forms the hinge for the seat back meets the thinner metal of the seat frame. If this fails it's an MOT failure.
Incidently, four door seats come with all the folding mechanism of the two doors already in place. Just the release cables and handles missing. Can be a usefull mod for the passenger seat if you ever want to carry something in your car that's longer than will normally fit in, especially on a touring.

If I want to swap the seats over, I guess I need to swap the seat adjustment mechanisms too?

I tried to do a seat swap last night in a spare 15 minutes but didnt have time to work out how to swap the mechanisms.

How do you do this? Is it striaght forward?

Seat backs swap straight over. For the bases , it would be easier to swap the cloth bits.
All fairly easy, but fiddely and time consuming.
