Starting problems - Advice needed

Hi there,
I have a 1984 Baur 323i which was running wonderfully until I attempted to follow the 'mend your windscreen wiper intermittent instructions' (clean out the grease etc to be found on this site) During this process I think I must have knocked something around the throttle actuator or loosened one of the wires which are attached to the sound dampening panel at the back of the engine compartment ( the one you have to unscrew to access the wiper motor)... any way the wipers are now running fine.
The problem is when I start the engine it'll turn over once or not at all. If I touch the accelerator very lightly the engine will rev to 4000rpm and then cut out. Without pressing the accelerator at all the engine will rev once then tick over then cut out.
I've check cables attached to sound deadening panel and all are connected so have a feeling I f**ked up the throttle actuator or something around there... any pointers would be appreciated
Luke
