hey, the car i bought off agreen didnt knock at all, now i've put my 15's on its evident that the extra strain has caused knocking (over bumps and when changing direction), the dampers seem fine but wondering what are the common bushes that fail? will this be bushes?

cheers

have you checked to make sure the wheel bolts are nice and tight?

Have you looked to see if there is any sign of tyres meeting metal? :o

open the boot and have a look at the rear suspension top mounts.

Where is the knocking coming from, can you feel it through your ass or just through the steering wheel?

I can't see how fitting some 15" wheels would cause this, most likely something disturbed in the jacking up of the vehicle etc.

yeah the wheels are defo tight, its not like a constant dugger dugger dugger or anythin (you know that made sense!) its defo somethin like bushes, just wondered whats a common/good place to start looking on E30's, front and back? cars done 154,000.

the wheels arent scraping at all, its not that sort of noise, plus the wheels were on my identical car until the weekend, there's nowt unusual about that size either

cheers for the input chaps

ass and steering wheel, like today i went over a speed hump, but only on one half of the car and you could feel play front and rear and hear knocking as the weight of the body shifted about.

i dont mean 15's have caused it dude, just that with 14" balloons you cant feel as much as you can on 15" wideys!

aah, gotcha

sounds like the lower profile booties are showing up wear & tear with the suspension.

Odds are it is bushes are wankered, check the rear top mounts by opening the boot and pulling the carpet away that covers the arches, you should be able to see if there is rubber there still and if a mate bounces up & down with the car a bit you will see if they are all over the place or not, you do get some movement up & down as standard.

Otherwise you are looking at either front wishbone bushes or rear trailing arm and subframe bushes. Only way to determine is to jack the car up and use a pry bar to see how much movement there is. The front wishbone bushes at the rear of the wishbone will be obvious if they are mullered.

make sure you have the car supported on some axle stands or put some wheels & tyres under the car if you are gonna go crawling underneath it

sounds exactly like my old top mounts used to sound before they were replaced.

btw halfrauds had a deal recently, two axel stands and a trolley jack for £25, only crap prob but for that price who cares.

i had a similar problem when i put ma winter wheels on turned out the wheel balancing weights were hitting the front struts because they were the weights that clip on the rim instead of the ones that stick on the inside of the wheel. sounds weird but thats what it turned out to be i could see the wear on the weight and strut.
