M40-M42 conversion going well.

Just trying to suss out these weird looking rear exhaust mounts.I have bought 2 square rubbers,also 2 two piece brackets is this right,how does it clamp?

Any one any pics or diagrams of exhaust in place assembled underneath.

I also have a strange looking ECU bracket ,this is flat with a 25 degree bend one end and loads of holes in it? Should there be more than one piece?

Any one have any diagrams or pics, would be greatly appreciated.

Ive got an M40 1.8, but have driven he is, and like the extra pull.

How longs yours taken you? Im hoping to have it done in a weekend with a few people helping.

You had any problems mate? What bits can be kept from an m40 setup? i thought it might be quite simple because the engine mounts etc are all the same.

Yep with alittle help you can have it done properly in a weekend with a little hands on help.

Things that will need changing are the :

Engine wiring loom,
ECU,and bracket
Front piece of the prop,
Radiator,and front right lower rad bracket (as IS slightly bigger)
Exhaust + rear mounts
Engine mounts are different.
Brackets for twin coil (these will need welding in and need to be ordered in from Germany via your local dealer.)
Some really good oil....... and plenty of rags and patience.

I didnt realise the rear brackets for the exhaust are any different?

Its only the mount on the sub frame thats different.

The ECu bracket is three piece. Two sides one bottom.

I think I've got a spare 318is bracket in the garage, let me know if you need it.

Those two exhaust brackets are looped round the back box so that the rubber mounts match up with those on the body; like straps round a wooden barrel.

What exatcly are the coils? and is there another way of fixing them in without welding them?


Also, if anyone could let me know on each of these!

Engine wiring loom- Ill have the full loom, will it be a case of just swapping them over, or are there any wierd connections that wont fit?

ECU,and bracket - Im going to have the full loom/ECU and i imagen bracket, so hoperfully it will just fit in

Front piece of the prop, -Rather than using bits of both,Can i just use the IS prop itself?

iS prop will be fine, as all diff connections are the same and you'll be using the M42 gearbox I imagine!

yeh mate.I basically think im getting, the lump, ECU plus loom, box, prop,rad, coils . So it should be ok.

Just hoping the engines all good cond etc, 158k miles, compared to my nice 125k'er in at the moment!

The bracket will be for the four ignition coils (basically replaces the dizzy), which are mounted beside the engine - you'll see them on any pic of an iS engine bay.

I don't know how you'll get away with not welding the bracket though...

Oh right Might be a bit of a problem. Dont supose anyone could post a picture showing the coils?

So, whats the way around this? I take it that theres no other way of fittin the coil packs up apart form welding it? I dont think i have access to any equiptment, nor the knowledge! Me and Dave might have to bodge it with somthing. Im sure i can get it to hold temporeraly

Apologies for not following up my thread ..been busy covered in grime fiddiling under the car.

The knob in the parts gave me E36 flat exhaust mounts.....no wonder I could"nt suss it out.

Engine turns over and nearly fires up but I aint risking it without the manifold fitted.

Which brings me to the next point,the manifold is well tricky to bolt up.
Manifold studs tend to weld themselves to the nuts.Hence they come away from the engine.
If you intend to put on the whole front section including manifold.
Treat yourself to some studs,nuts and gaskets,I now wish I had done this for speed put the new studs on the engine before she goes in. Place the front exhaust/manifold section in place. Drop in the engine.Put the gaskets on the studs line it up hey presto you will thank me forever.Fully bolt the engine/diff and hopefully the rest is plug and play.

Leave the 318i positve in to the fuse box,dont need to touch the fuse box,this is the seperate power supply that connects to the small nut on the battery+.

Grab the ECU and the mounting brackets and plate.

Also throttle cable is different and the rear exhaust mounts are the wraparound type.

Be sure to remove the stabliser bars from the engine mounts,when removing 318i engine,these look like small pistons.

One last thing BMW put these cars together they are put together very logically ,everything is straightforward and well thought out. ......

Don't be afraid I have spent many months pondering this Get in the garage take your time allow at least 3 days (1 with some heavy lugger freind for Engine in/out.)

Take yor time.Dont be afraid.Hire a good quality engine crane Ԛ£20 for the weekend Allow the car to be out of action for maybe a week in case of any complications....but to tell you the truth the only complications were waiting for all the little fiddley parts coming in to the dealers.

You should have all the knowlage you need know, any more questions give us a shout.
