Usually the two rubber hoses found under the top half of the inlet manifold.
Remove the top of the manifold, and replace the rubber with new ones from BMW. Cured mine instantly.
Common fault, and easy fix.

what about the hosees that connect on to the fuel filter. mine had a very minute leak coming from the top hose connecting to the filter but gave a very strong smell.

Check your injector o-rings.
My M42 used to leak petrol onto the inlet manifold when cold and sealed again once the engine had warmed up.

agree with mark....check your injectors o rings.
mine leaked but it was from the cracked injector body......and that was the one right above the distributor so a definite fire risk!
hope it helps.

My touring smelt of fuel when it was parked on the drive. Tracked it to the stub pipe from the filler where it joins the tank.
