im going to be remapping my i.s sometime in the next month or two but ive been wondering should i just remap it or chip it and remap it?

I think you need to read up about the differences in chipping and remapping - do some googles.

Any form of altering the lookup tables in the ECU (known as maps) is mapping. This is most often on older cars (mid eighties to late 90s) done by replacing the a chip - this is chipping. So effectively they're the same thing. There are however other ways to change the map, this can involve specific equipment and phrases like "live mapping".

If you replace the ECU with something like Emerald or Megasquirt, or add on a controller such as unichip then these can be remapped easily via somebody with the correct equipment.

chances are you just want a chip first. if you then modify the car with cams, manifold, big bore throttle bodies etc then you may want some form of remappable system later on. that will also be useful if you ever went forced induction (turbo/supercharger)

ive got the money waiting for cams and bbtb so i might just put them on when they arrive and remap it........................but ive been looking down the supercharger road for a while now, ahhh what to do

BTBB is unproven - a lot of iS owners say there's no gains from BTTB.

Cams will be good but again, BHP per £ is kind of shocking with that route.

First thing I would do is re-map, and also ask yourself what you want from the engine.

what i want from the engine is about 170bhp so what is recommended?

Well, from 138 from a stock 318iS - you won't even get 170 with a BBTB AND cams AND a re-map AND exhaust.

Forced induction I guess but I've never really been into this method.

Again, IMO I'd go for re-map, full and proper service and spread the money around elsewhere too - some awesome tires, brakes, sort the suspension out and all the bushes etc.

Then, maybe put some cams in just to be different and see what they do.

You might make 160 with all that?

Could always bore it out too - be really different.

M42's can make good power - just costly is all.

Try www.M42club.com and look around there for some big engine work.

Look at Kos' old car. 160 plus at a reasonable low budget and not too many modifcations either.

If you wanted to really make power out of the M42, ITBs is the way to go in N/A.


If I was starting out on a stock iS,
1. The remap.
2. Redue all the bushings upgrading the important ones
3. A proper steering rack
4. Then an LSD
5. Bilstein B8s
6. H&R arbs
7. Lightweight flywheel

And then decide do I want to go further
