318iS Ignition Switch

Hi,
BMW did not start one day, even when key turned all the way.
I kept on trying and held the key in the most turned position, then noticed smoke coming out of the barrell!!
Called out RAC - they said the ignition switch is failing and needs to be replaced.
He explained the smoke was coming from the plastic casing around the switch, which was melting due to the wires shorting out.
It this common?
How much is a new switch and is it easy to put in?
Cheers guys....
Satty.
