E30 Zone

Changed my fanbelt just fine once I had figured out the unit pivots so you can move it closer to the engine, however I am having troubles doing the same with the PAS pump.

I have removed what looked like a slightly curved bracket held on by 2 bolts which I assumed allowed the unit to pivot, but this appears not to be the case - I am clearly not undoing the right nuts but there appear to be quite afew around there - What's the deal???

It's advisable to loosen the 2 lower pivot bolts as well as the tensioner nuts (numbers 15 and 7 below)

Goes for the alternator as well!

So, let me get this straight. I need to loosen:

11, 15, and both 7's and the unit should then pivot?

Correct. Only loosen 15 a little. Just enough to allow 14 to turn.
If you slacken 15 too much, the teeth on 14 will slip off of the side of the rack on 12, and the teeth will be damaged.

Is the adjuster bar still in good nick?

I had trouble getting my pas belt off and I assumed it was as the pump was stuck - had to remove the pulley to get the belt off!

Turned out a previous owner had stripped some of the teeth from the adjuster bar and rather than replace (£8 or so from dealer) they'd used a shorter drive belt so the tension was correct but the belt was a pain to get on and off..
